Create Smart Home Device Groups

By adding your compatible smart home devices to a group, you can control them with simple commands, like "Turn on [group name]."

When you add an Echo device to a smart home group, Alexa can act intelligently on your request. For example, say, "Lights on," when standing in the room that corresponds to your smart home group to control the devices in that group. To learn more about controlling connected smart home devices, go to Use Smart Home Devices.

Note: Your Echo device can only be added to one smart home group at a time.

To create a smart home device groups in the Alexa app:

  1. Go to the menu, and select the Devices icon "".
  2. Select the + icon, and then Add group.
  3. Use pre-set group names, or create your own, and then select Next.
  4. Select the devices you want to include and then Save.
Preferred Speaker and Groups

Preferred speakers are speakers selected as the default speaker in a Device group. If you have created a Device group with an Alexa-enabled device, all you have to say is, "Play the Beatles." Alexa starts playing music on your preferred speaker, no matter which one is closest or which group it's in. If no preferred speaker is selected in a group, music only plays on the device that heard your request. You can choose a preferred speaker in your Device group from the Alexa app.

Note: You can choose a specific Multi-Room Music group or speaker set, or multiple third-party speakers, as a preferred speaker. To learn more about speaker sets, go to Set Up Echo Speakers For Stereo Sound.
