Family Library on Kindle E-Readers

With Family Library, you can share select Kindle books with the other members of your Amazon Household. You can link Amazon accounts to create an Amazon Household from your Kindle e-reader.

You can use Family Library on Kindle Paperwhite (5th Generation) and newer e-reader devices. See Which Kindle E-reader Do I Have? if you're not sure which Kindle e-reader model you're using.

You can find content shared through Family Library in the Cloud tab of your Kindle. On your Kindle, filter by My Books or Shared Books to choose what content you are viewing.

For more information, go to About Amazon Households and Family Library.

Create an Amazon Household from Your Kindle E-Reader

To share content using Family Library, both adults need to authorize each other to use the payment methods associated with their Amazon accounts. This will not affect either adult’s current payment settings. Each adult can copy the payment method of the other adult to their Amazon account.

If you disable content sharing any payment methods that were copied to the other Amazon account will be deleted automatically.

To link Amazon accounts and create an Amazon Household from your Kindle:
  1. From the Home screen, select the Menu, and then select Settings.
  2. Select Household & Family Library (newer generation devices) or select Registration and Household, and then select Household and Family Library (earlier generation devices).
  3. Select Add a New Person, then Add Adult.
  4. Pass your Kindle to the adult you’d like to add to your household. Ask them to enter the email address and password they use to sign in to their Amazon account. If they do not have an Amazon account, they can go to the Amazon website to create one.
  5. After entering their email address and password, the other adult will have the opportunity to enable sharing. They can choose to share all of their purchased content, or only individual titles with you.
Important: By choosing to enable sharing, they are authorizing you to use any payment methods associated with their Amazon account for purchases on Amazon.
  6. The other adult is prompted to pass your Kindle back to you, then you have the option to enable sharing.

Create a Child Profile for Your Amazon Household

You can have up to four child profiles in your Amazon Household and choose which content is shared with your kids.

To create a child profile from your Kindle:
  1. From the Home screen, select the Menu icon.
  2. Select Household & Family Library (newer generation devices) or select Registration and Household, and then select Household & Family Library (earlier generation devices).
  3. SelectAdd a New Person, then Add Child.

Note: If you have already created the maximum number of child profiles, the option to add a new person will be unavailable.

  4. Enter your parental controls password, then the child’s name, birthday, and gender.
  5. Select the titles you want to include in the child’s library, then tap Next.
  6. Review the child’s profile and reading settings, then select Done.

Note: Your device needs a wireless connection to access any profiles created from the Amazon website. To learn more about connecting your device wirelessly, go to Connect to Wi-Fi.

Leave an Amazon Household from Your Kindle E-Reader

To leave an Amazon Household and stop sharing all of your content and payment methods:
  1. From the Home screen, select the Menu icon, and then select Settings.
  2. Select Household & Family Library (newer generation devices), or select Registration and Household, and then Household & Family Library (earlier generation devices).
  3. Select the adult profile to leave the household.
  4. Enter the password for that profile, if needed.
  5. Select Leave Household, and then select OK.

After leaving the Amazon Household, you will both lose access to any content, payment methods, and Prime benefits that were shared from the other adult.

Note: If either adult leaves the Amazon Household, both adults will be unable to join an Amazon Household with a different adult for 180 days. If you’ve accidentally left an Amazon Household go to Manage Your Household to rejoin an Amazon Household with the same person.
