Modify Silk Settings

You can change settings for the Silk browser, such as privacy controls or the default search engine, to customise your browsing experience. Help for Kindle Fire (2nd Generation), Kindle Fire HD 7" (2nd Generation), and Kindle Fire HD 8.9" (2nd Generation).

To access settings for the Silk browser, swipe from the left edge of the page, or tap the Navigation Panel icon, and then tap Settings.

Setting Description
Search Engine

Select Bing, Google, or Yahoo! as your default search engine.

Pop-Up Windows

Select to Always show pop-ups, Never show pop-ups, or Ask before showing pop-ups.

Your Data

Manage settings for saved data within the Silk browser.

  • Clear Browser Data - Control your privacy by deleting your browser history, including websites you've visited, saved passwords, and personal information added to forms.
  • Website Data - Manage advanced settings for individual websites.
  • Accept cookies - Cookies are enabled by default, but you can turn them off and on.

    What is a cookie?: Cookies are small packets of data sent from a website and stored in the browser when you visit the website. Cookies retain user information (such as your preferences or settings), so that the next time you visit a website, you can pick up from where you left off (for example, proceeding to checkout on Amazon with items left in your cart from a previous browsing session).

  • Enable Location Access - Allow sites to request access to your location. When a website wants to use your location data, Silk will prompt you at the bottom of the page. Tap Allow to send your location data to the website, or tap Decline to ignore the request.
  • Prompt Before Download - Receive a notification when downloading items (such as images or PDF documents) from websites.
  • Remember passwords - Select this option to save your user names and passwords for websites that you visit often.
  • Form Autofill - Fill out your contact information on web forms with a single touch by saving form data for later use.
  • Saved Autofill Profiles - View, edit, or delete saved autofill profiles.
Cloud Features

Allow Silk to use the Amazon Cloud for faster web page loading with Instant Page Loads and enable features like Trending Now and Backup & Restore for your Silk bookmarks and preferences.From here, you can also enable or disable encryption, which would encrypt requests routed through Amazon servers.

Note: Encryption may result in slower page loads.


Enable or disable advanced features for websites

  • Load Images - Allow websites to load images immediately.
  • Enable Javascript - Javascript allows interactive elements to appear on a website. When you disable this option, some websites may not work properly.
  • Show Security Warnings - Show a warning message when there is a problem with the site's security.
  • Do Not Track - Enable this setting to request that websites not display ads based on your browsing and search history. Websites may choose to ignore these requests.
  • Closed Captions - Edit closed captioning settings for supported videos played within Silk Browser.
  • Reset all Silk Settings - Reset the Silk Browser to its default settings.
