Household Profiles on Alexa Devices

You can add another adult to your Amazon Household to listen to either user's content (like music), manage account features (like shopping and to-do lists), share certain content through Family Library (like audiobooks and Kindle books), and access customized information (like news and traffic).

Add a User to Your Household

Make sure the person you're adding to your household is present, and then follow these steps in the Alexa app:

  1. Go to the menu and select Settings.
  2. Scroll to the Accounts section and select Household Profile.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions. As part of this process, you'll be prompted for the other user's account information; pass your phone, tablet, or laptop to the other user, so he/she can personally enter it.

  • When you add a second adult to your household, you are authorizing that person to use credit cards associated with your Amazon account for purchases on Amazon.
  • Teen and Child household profiles are not available with Alexa.
  • You can require a confirmation code for voice purchases in the Alexa app. Alexa will then ask for the confirmation code before completing purchases. To learn more, go to Manage Voice Purchasing Settings.
  • On Echo Show, the second adult in your household can view your Prime Photos. For information about restricting access to your photos, go to Restrict Access on Echo Show.

Switch to Another Profile

After you set up a household, you can switch accounts between users on your Alexa devices--just say, "switch accounts."

Tip: To check the profile you're currently using, you can say, "which account is this?"

When browsing a content library in the Alexa app, use the drop-down menu at the top of the screen to toggle between user libraries.

Remove a User from Your Household

When you remove an adult from your household, you aren't able to add either user account to another household for 180 days.

Note: If you remove an adult by accident and want to re-add that user to your household, please contact Customer Service.

To remove a user from your household:

  1. Open the Alexa app, go to the menu, and select Settings.
  2. Scroll to the Accounts section, and select In an Amazon household with [name].
  3. Select Remove next to the user you want to remove. If you're removing yourself, select Leave.
  4. Select Remove again to confirm the change.
