Sync Across Fire & Kindle Devices and Apps

Whispersync synchronizes your content across supported devices and apps.

Whispersync backs up your data and furthest location in the Cloud on supported devices and apps. You can access your content and pick up where you left off on another supported app or device that is registered to the same account.

Whispesync is supported in these content categories:

  • Books from the Kindle Store
  • Personal documents that are converted to Kindle format
  • Newspapers and magazines from the Kindle Store
  • Audiobooks from Audible.com
  • Amazon Video
  • Apps and games from Amazon Appstore

Sync Your Books & Personal Documents Automatically

Whispersync for Books allows you to stop reading on one device and pick up where you left off on another device, as long as both devices are registered to the same Amazon account. Whispersync for Books is enabled by default.

Whispersync allows you to view the bookmarks, highlights and notes that were created on other devices registered to the same Amazon account. Additionally, Whispersync automatically syncs your last page read and annotations for personal documents that are converted to Kindle format.

To ensure Whispersync is enabled, or to disable Whispersync:

  1. Go to Manage Your Content and Devices.
  2. Select the Settings tab.
  3. Under Device Synchronization (Whispersync Settings), set Whispersync Device Synchronization to ON or OFF.

To avoid syncing errors:

  • Keep your device connected to a wireless network to allow automatic syncing across your Fire & Kindle devices and Kindle reading apps. If you put your device into sleep mode instead of turning it off, you will not disable the wireless connection.
  • Always return to the Home screen on your device when you're finished reading.
  • To view your bookmarks, highlights and notes on other devices, you also need to back up your annotations. See Back Up Your Bookmarks, Notes & Highlights.

Back Up Your Bookmarks, Notes & Highlights

Automatically back up your bookmarks, notes and highlights to your Kindle Library in the Cloud, so you can view them on Fire tablets, Kindle e-readers and Kindle reading apps that are registered to the same Amazon account.Your notes and highlights are also counted in Popular Highlights.

Annotations Backup is automatically enabled on Fire tablets and cannot be disabled. With Kindle e-readers and Kindle reading apps, check to see if Annotations Backup is enabled.

To back up your bookmarks, notes and highlights on your Kindle e-reader or Kindle reading app:

  1. Ensure Whispersync is enabled. See Sync Your Books & Personal Documents Automatically.
  2. From your Kindle e-reader or Kindle reading app, go to the Home screen, select the Menu button or icon and then select Settings. If you have a Kindle Touch (4th Generation) or Kindle Paperwhite (5th Generation), select Reading Options.
  3. Make sure Annotations Backup is ON.

Syncing Audiobooks, Amazon Video & Games

Audible Audiobooks (with Whispersync for Voice)

If you've linked your Audible and Amazon accounts and you own both the Audible audiobook and Kindle version of a title, Whispersync for Voice will maintain your last page read between the Audible and Kindle version. This allows you to switch between reading and listening to a title without losing your place.

To learn more about audiobooks and linking your Audible and Amazon accounts, go to Audible Audiobooks.

Amazon Video

Whispersync for Video keeps track of your last location in a video so you can resume watching across your Fire tablet, PC, Mac, or any of over 300 compatible TVs, Blu-ray players, or devices.

To learn more, go to Amazon Video.

Games

Whispersync for Games on Fire tablets saves your data in the Cloud. For games that have Whispersync for Games enabled, your saved progress, achievements, leaderboard scores and all of the content you've unlocked within the game are stored in the Cloud whenever you go online.
