Quick Fix: Slow or Frozen Screen

If your Fire tablet or Kindle e-reader screen is slow to respond or freezes, restart your device or try the troubleshooting steps below.

Troubleshooting Frozen Screen

Press and hold, or slide and hold, the Power button for a full 40 seconds, even after the screen goes blank, then let go. Press or slide the power button to restart if the device does not start up again on its own.

If the screen is still unresponsive, plug in your device using the USB cord or power adapter that came with it. We recommend charging Fire tablets with an Amazon power adapter. Let the device charge for 30 minutes, unplug it, and then try to restart again.

Troubleshooting Slow Screen Response

Below are some potential reasons you might experience a slow or unresponsive Fire tablet or Kindle e-reader screen. Follow the troubleshooting steps to optimise your device screen performance.

Potential Issue Troubleshooting Steps
Restart needed

Restarting your device involves turning it off completely and then turning it back on again.

Restart your device from the Power dialogue or Settings menu:

  • Fire tablets: Press and hold the power button for two to three seconds until you see the message "Do you want to shut down your Kindle?" or "Do you want to shut down your Fire?" and then tap Shut Down, Power Off, or OK. After the device has completely turned off, press the power button for two to three seconds to restart your Fire tablet.
  • Kindle e-readers: From Home, select Menu and then select Settings. From Settings, select Menu again and then select Restart.

Previous software version

Make sure you have the latest software version for your device. To learn more, go to Fire and Kindle Software Updates and select your device to find the latest software update.

Download in progress

If you are currently downloading content on your device, it may be slow to respond until all downloads are complete. It may also be slow immediately after downloading a large amount of content.

Device temperature

Avoid using your device in extreme hot or cold temperature conditions.

Device accessories

If you have a protective case or screen, try removing it and testing the device without it.

Touchscreen is dirty

Clean the screen with a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth.

Avoid using the device while wearing gloves, with wet hands or immediately after applying hand lotion.

Multiple Fire tablet apps running

If you have multiple apps running on your Fire tablet, quit unused apps.

Low battery

If your device battery is low, charge your device for at least 30 minutes and then try restarting again

Reset needed

If you continue to experience slowness after restarting your device, try resetting your device.

Fire tablets: For most Fire tablets, swipe down from the top of the screen and then tap Settings or More. Tap Device or Device Options, and then tap Reset to Factory Defaults.

Kindle e-readers: From the Home screen select Menu and then select Settings. Select Menu again and select Reset Device or Reset to Factory Defaults.

Important: Resetting your device will remove your personal information (including your settings for Parental Controls), Amazon account information, Wi-Fi settings, and any downloaded content. Because a factory reset will remove any content you've downloaded to your device, make sure to back up your personal content to your computer first. Any content you purchased from Amazon is automatically saved to the Cloud and can be downloaded again when you register your Fire tablet or Kindle e-reader to your account again.

Any in-app items on your Fire tablet may be lost during a factory reset. Please check with the app developer for more details on their in-app policies before completing a factory reset. If you have parental controls enabled on your tablet prior to the factory reset, you will need to turn them back on once the device is re-registered.
