During the tour, visitors will have the chance to take a close look at the daily job of employees at work, as well as observing many of the key processes and technologies of the fulfilment centre, from picking – retrieving ordered items from the shelves – to packing, where items are carefully parcelled up in Amazon’s famous brown boxes before being sent on their way to customers.

Friends and family take the inaugural tour

The Staffordshire site opened its doors to visitors for the first time on February 28 2015, welcoming more than 150 friends and family of employees working there, as well as representatives from the local council and nearby Chancel Primary School. For many of them it was a unique opportunity to gain a better idea of the roles their loved ones carry out in the fulfilment centre on a daily basis.

For anyone who is interested, Amazon’s doors are now open, with four tours a month taking place at the Rugeley site until the end of September. Visits will start again in January 2016, to allow people working in the fulfilment centre to focus on customer orders during the busy Christmas period.

Anyone over the age of six who is curious to discover first-hand what happens in Amazon’s fulfilment centres can register for one of these special tours by logging on to
