Customer Review

4 August 2018
I'm finding this book so interesting! I'm so glad I heard about it. After seeing the sculpture group on the Thames Path I'd read Brockway's Bermondsey Story, and enjoyed it but didn't quite know how much to believe. It was really good to find this study which so convincingly corrects the impression of Ada having just tagged along in Alfred's wake. I also learned a lot about a whole range of other initiatives apart from the Salters' work in Bermondsey, eg the West London Mission and Sisters of the People, other aspects of the settlement movement, and about the ILP and the Suffrage movement. This is the kind of book that changes your understanding of history.
