Customer Review

8 December 2016
There are three suitors for the hand of Sybil, the eponymous heroine of the book. We read in hope that the right one will prevail, and thus the story unfolds and holds us in suspense. But at the same time the book describes and supplies the answers to the astonishing man-made upheaval of the times. The political ideas of the way to obtain universal suffrage are expressed in sometimes surprisingly modern terms. The five points of the Chartists are examined during the course of this well-plotted novel. And the resolution proves very satisfactory. There are many characters introduced, and a complex plot ranging from the top echelons of society to the dregs, involves us in their several lives. Although the sentence structure is truly Victorian, getting to grips with the themes expressed is made quite straightforward. The appalling working conditions of the period are exposed in all its brutality. A novel that opens the eyes and gives much upon which to reflect. A great read.
