I do not want to spoil the viewing for anyone, so I am not going to reveal too much about what happens in this series. I will only tell you how the story begins.
“Thicker than Water” is a story series about three siblings – two brothers and a sister – whose mother owns a hotel in the Aaland Islands, located between Sweden and Finland. The siblings grew up together, but later they went their separate ways and now they are not close at all.
When their mother dies and her will is opened, it turns out that she has left the hotel to the three siblings. However, there is one important condition: in order to inherit the hotel, they must live together and run the hotel together for one summer season. This will not be easy, because the siblings are not close. When we see them together, for the first time in many years, it is obvious that they are not happy together.
Oskar has been running the hotel with his mother and his family. He feels the hotel belongs to him. He does not want his brother or his sister to interfere in “his” business.
Lasse has just opened his own restaurant in Stockholm. Things are not going well with the new restaurant, but he does not want to live in Aaland.
Jonna is an actress, who is busy with her career in Stockholm and perhaps in Germany. She does not want to live in Aaland, either.
However, the conditions of the will are clear. If they want to inherit the hotel, they must run it together. There is no way around it, so even though they are not happy about it, the three siblings promise each other that they are going to try and fulfill the conditions of the will. Can they do it?
They face several problems. Some problems are connected with the present, things which are happening right now. Other problems are connected with the past. In fact, the past is much more important than any of them would think. Each of the three siblings has a deep and dark secret, and these secrets will come back to haunt them. From time to time there is a flashback to the time when the siblings were children (around 10 years old) or when they were teenagers (around 15 years old).
This is how the story begins. If you want to find out what happens with the siblings, the hotel, and the people around them, you will have to watch the series.
The location chosen for this series – the Aaland Islands – is very beautiful. When a character leaves the islands, he or she often goes west to Stockholm, the capital of Sweden. But sometimes a character goes east to Helsinki, the capital of Finland, which is known as Helsingfors in Swedish.
The beautiful location offers a sharp contrast to some of the bad things that happen in this series. It is a very Scandinavian drama. If you like this style and this atmosphere, this series could be something for you.
I like it. What do other reviewers say about it? On IMDb it has a rating of 72 per cent, which corresponds to three and a half stars on Amazon. If you ask me, this rating is too low. I want to go all the way to the top with is product.
In my opinion, this Swedish drama is well-written and the actors play their roles well. I think it deserves a rating of five stars.
PS. Season two was shown on Swedish television in 2016. Apparently, it is not available from Amazon UK.
