This is an incredible novel, a companion to the brilliant "life after life". This time we follow Teddy's story, brrother to Ursula, who becomes a pilot of a Halifax bomber in WW2. The story makes huge leaps from 1925 to 1980 to 1947 as we are told parts of the story from different perspectives. Teddy is a character I really cared about, the way he lives and the small kindnesses and decency make him loveable. Atkinsons writing is superb, the beauty of it and clever multi-layering, her playfulness, humour, heartwrenching emotional scenes. Her research is meticulous, I learned so much about life as an RAF pilot in WW2, the descriptions so vivid I felt I was there alongside the crew. I loved the imagery, the silver hare and the skylarks- all so powerful. The themes are so huge, I am still thinking about them. The fragility of life and its transitory nature, the senselessnes of war. It is hugely intelligent (I am still digesting this now) and I loved the ending, feeling like my heart and head were equally engaged. I think you would get so much more from this by reading "life after life" first. I thoroughly recommend this book
