This is the second book of the author I have bought, the previous one being “Empire State”. I find his approach to writing very easy to follow and understand. The author maintains an accessible academic style blended with a good tempo of pace through the text, avoiding the reader becoming disheartened which the amount of information being presented. Also included in the book are several maps, illustrations and photographs which in my view enhances the overall presentation.
As a wargamer, I have been particularly waiting for “Septimius Severus in Scotland”. In the book, the author not only provides a detailed explanation of the Roman forces engaged and a description of Severus’s campaigns in Scotland, as you would expect, but also puts into context the reasons Severus felt the need to invade Scotland, and the aftermath, which is something that is sometimes overlooked by some historic reference books about a specific military campaign. Uniquely, in “Septimius Severus in Scotland”, the author also provides a description of how Roman society and the economy functioned and influenced Severus. This I found particularly informative.
“Septimius Severus in Scotland” is a book I would recommend to anyone with an interest not only in Roman history, but history in general, and would complement any historic literary collection.
