I grew up watching the film the Great Escape every year on Christmas Day - but this is the real story behind the breakout by one of only three men who actually made a 'home run'. The film showed a Brit, Canadian and American escaping and making a 'home run'. In reality, it was two Norwegians and Bram 'Bob' Vanderstok (also known as van der Stok). Vanderstok was more than a Stalag Luft III escapee - he is the most highly decorated Dutch aviator (and had a very interesting postwar life, as explained by his son Robert Vanderstok in a new introduction). The book also has a foreword by Simon Pearson who write an excellent biography of Roger Bushell - the so-called 'Big X' of Stalag Luft III who planned the escape on March 24th/25th 1944. Vanderstok's book is essential reading for anyone interested in the most important breakout of World War II. Jens Muller, one of the Norwegian pilots, also wrote a compelling memoir detailing the break - both are well-illustrated and well-written and highly recommended.
