The description on the front of this book “recipes and rituals to realign the body and mind” really captures the essence of what this book is all about. It is primarily a cookbook but it’s rooted in the principle that mind, mood, environment and individual circumstances all contribute to how we feel - and diet is strongly connected to this and contributes to your wellbeing.
It’s a holistic approach to health and wellbeing and a book that sits well with my own approach towards food, mood and health. It teaches you to slow down, take time for yourself and be more mindful with your food choices and in your approach to life in general. There’s a lot in the book that I hadn’t given any thought to previously so it feels like an enriching read. There are cooking tips and plenty of wellness inspiration (beyond food) throughout the book so there’s really a lot to read and absorb.
The recipes themselves are all vegetarian from what I can tell. As you would expect, they concentrate on wholesome ingredients for a varied and balanced diet. Smoothies, snacks, desserts, breakfast ideas, light meals and richer supper recipes too. I’m admittedly not too keen on the organisation of the recipes as they don’t appear in neat categories like “main course” and “dessert” for example, but rather as part of a theme - so for example you might get a chapter about the morning that talks about yoga and this will include energising recipes for a tumeric tonic, a breakfast idea like buckwheat waffles and interestingly also a recipe for lip balm that you can actually make yourself using natural ingredients - there are quite a few of these beauty and diy aromatherapy type things in the book for yourself and the home, if you like this kind of thing.
The food photography in the book is understated and nice enough but there aren’t enough of them for my liking. Not every recipe comes with an accompanying photo, which I found disappointing as it’s the photo that you notice when you’re browsing through recipes during meal planning and I also rely on the photo as a reference point during the cooking process.
Overall, this is a pretty interesting book - more than just another “seen it all before” cookbook - it’s designed to feed you in more ways than one. I do think the book will appeal most to those who take a more holistic approach to life already or are looking for a way into it - for example, someone who enjoys creative journalling, meditation or self-help books, who is also looking for ways to eat more healthy foods and learn about some of the benefits, might really enjoy this book. If you just want a vegan / vegetarian / healthy eating recipe book without any other extra dialogue (or “distractions”) you might want to choose something else. You can take a lot from this book and incorporate the principles into your everyday so I would say it's a satisfying read and worthy kitchen companion - for the right person.
