Customer Review

Due to ever decreasing amount of space in my study, I decided to retire my multi-channel amp and monitors. I needed something with a small desktop footprint but still capable of packing a punch.

Previously I've gifted a set of T20 speakers, and they sounded "ok", so thought I'd give these a whirl (although bought directly from Creative for a £2 saving per set).

They are nice a narrow which reduces the space that is needed, but of course this means a reduction in woofer size, something that Creative has tried to cater for with two woofers and a ported design.

Before playing with the controls the sound is fairly flat and uninspiring with a warm feel, dialling up the treble on the speakers to max will brighten up the sound, but it's still lack-luster. Up'ing the bass dial will increases the bass response without distorting the speakers, but is quite a broad tweak, pushing the > 100Hz frequencies too which can lead to more muddiness.

The specification lists the frequency response down to 50Hz, which it does achieve, but there is no punch to it. 50Hz is the absolute bottom of the response, peaking weakly at 60Hz before dropping off at 80Hz and ramping up massively at 130Hz. The high end starts dropping off at a very low 10KHz before taking a dive at 15KHz and disappearing almost squarely on 20KHz. Whilst lacking in punch, the bass is tightly controlled with notes clear and precise.

With a bit of EQ work it doesn't take a lot to really make these speakers sing. I found maxing the treble, 3/4 on the bass and then dropping the extra 100-200Hz in EQ along with a nudge at 16KHz worked really well for my room - obviously YMMV depending on the listening environment. Adding in a small sub-woofer helps to reinforce the low-frequencies for music with a strong bass-line, but isn't entirely necessary as it would be easy to overpower the controlled bass of the speakers and become unbalanced.

The sound-stage and stereo imaging is impressive for such a small set of speakers. Once fully setup and the volume jacked up they provide an enjoyable, bright listening experience.

In conclusion: These are great for a bit of light listening to in a small space, but their size is also their down-fall not being able to bring any substantial feeling to the low end, which depending on the music being listened to can leave you feeling disappointed. A lot of EQ work is required to get these speakers to sing, and whilst there is a bass and treble dial on the speakers, you will need to do more at the pre-amp stage, which not feasible for everybody.
