Nigel became unruly following the death of both his sister and his Father. His Mother did not understand this, not realising the cause of Nigel's behaviour was due to the family bereavements. Eventually she put Nigel into 'care'. The book then describes the physical, sexual and mental abuse he suffered by the hands of his fellow boys and the staff, in all of the homes he was moved to. I found the numerous descriptions of the physical abuse and violence almost put me off reading the book as there was so many of them, however, I persevered as I wanted to know whether Nigel survived and eventually flourished. I also thought that the poor child clearly went through unimaginable torment over the years and the least I could do was to read his story.
