The End of Magic by Mark Stay has all the elements of a fantasy novel that we all know and love: wars and warlords, kings and castles, magical beasts and monsters, and wizards and witches; all brought together in believable, detailed world. Certainly there is enough of the familiar here to get the fantasy hit that you need but also enough new and different ideas to make it a refreshing take on the genre. The main one, of course, hinted at by the title: what happens in a world built on the use of magic after it has gone? The characters are well-rounded and likeable and the story moves along at a good pace which keeps the pages turning. As well as laugh out loud moments there are also scenes of genuine emotion making for a story that stays (no pun intended) with you, and, for me, one I will return to. I would highly recommend The End of Magic to anyone who enjoys fantasy and eagerly await more from Mr Stay.
