A very good book but relies largely on the reader having an understanding of the importance of structure in fiction to enjoy it. The narrative is simple: the book consists of a series of short relations about the main characters time in Greece and the individuals that they meet, to understand the book on a thematic level you have to compare and analyse the themes that are developed in each chapter with it's accompanying chapters and then with the thematic thread of the book as a whole. The main character is strangely absent and at times the book feels cold but if you enjoy stories about people's lives, failings, and psychological desires then this is a book for you. Plus, most chapters are largely self contained so if you are reading on the train it is easy to dip in and out.
