Customer Review

3 October 2016
The good: A unique premise, with a likeable main character, Cal, who is part geeky scientist, part environmental activist and part weird loner, a combination that made me warm to him immediately. I love the way that he is anti-social, a rule breaker and doesn’t always do the right thing, yet he doesn’t have any of the arrogance or entitlement that DI Ryan has; at heart, he’s kind and somewhat innocent, and funny without meaning to be. I found Cal’s family history and the mystery relating to his grandfather interesting, and I liked the way that all three strands of the story were brought together in the second half of the novel.

The bad: For some reason I found it hard to feel invested in the people trafficking storyline, and it wasn’t nearly as interesting or well written as the sections on Cal’s own family history. The first half of the book was slow and it was only around the 50% mark that I felt I’d really ‘got into it’. The conversations between the policewomen didn’t ring true: they were acting like silly teenage girls, not dedicated professionals.

On the whole, it was Cal who really made the novel; without him, I think it would have been very average.
