5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended, 19 Mar. 2017
This review is from: INK (Paperback)
This is a great debut novel. The story quickly draws you in both because of the macabre basic premise that this is a community where your life story is recorded in tattoos on the skin but also because the central character Leora is so well drawn. Leora feels like a real adolescent with her uncertainties about her appearance, her self-confidence, her preoccupations with the meaning of life, an obsession with death and the battle between good and evil. This combination of wonderful storytelling and empathy with the main character makes for gripping read. As an older adult I felt this book also has a chilling understanding of the demonisation of the Other in the way that the blanks( the unmarked ) are portrayed and has an unfortunate resonance with our current politics.
However, this is a story for young adults but is an adventure of a different kind with an emphasis on emotional inquiry embedded in a story which carries you along at a good pace. The style makes for an easy read and I found the fables wound into the story gave an enchanting otherworldliness.
I am sure I would have devoured this book with great pleasure when I was a young adult. I presume that this category starts at 12 years and remains with us for the rest of our lives!
Read and enjoy!

Poorly made and to describe this as a skating doll is ridiculous. Our granddaughter lost interest very quickly even though she is a frozen fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Living through loss, 3 Jun. 2014
This review is from: The Heather Blazing (Paperback)
I love Toibins writing style and this book is one of his best. An Irish High Court judge who has learnt to suppress his emotions due to the loss of his mother in early childhood combined with his fathers emotional remoteness finds himself examining the past prompted by changes in the physical coastline at the families seaside holiday home. The reader is immersed in Eamon's work and personal life in a way which is truly moving as the themes resonate with so much that is common in the family life of men. There is a wonderful naturalness about the writing which disguises the depth of the insights into how internal emotional change is achieved.
