The Devil in Ermine
The Devil in Ermine
by Isolde Martyn
Edition: Paperback
Price: £6.99

5.0 out of 5 stars What a Medieval treat!, 22 Jan. 2014
This review is from: The Devil in Ermine (Paperback)
This novel is beautifully constructed and Isolde Martyn has chosen an unusual subject, carefully researched the Duke of Buckingham, Richard III and the period itself. It is a controversial time in history when Edward V became king and all the intricate politics this involved. We are taken directly into this era and get a well detailed view of the main characters, the way of life, clothes, food, travel, all the things which make a book relevant and absorbing.

I found the book hard to put down, and as a Ricardian, am really pleased at the sensitive and just portrayal of King Richard III, and indeed all the other characters in this book.

Well done, Isolde, and please keep books of this calibre coming!

5.0 out of 5 stars Elegant listening!, 26 Dec. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A very enjoyable cd with a good and varied selection of music. It is a joy to hear the old musical instruments, played accurately and with love and care.

This is the first cd of the York Waits i have purchased, and it certainly won't be the last! I particularly love York and York Minister and this music epitomizes the place and the time of Richard III. I am a Ricardian, and am busy telling like-minded friends how good this cd is - i can thoroughly recommend it!

3.0 out of 5 stars Everything, naturally, from the Woodvilles point of view, 26 Dec. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I gave up three-quarter way through the book, because (as per the name) the Woodville family appeared perfect. Well, none of us are perfect, but this book does not reflect that sentiment.

It was disappointing but, in all fairness, an interesting read. I am a Ricardian so perhaps not the best person to view the Woodville family as totally wonderful. However dates and circumstances are clearly and accurately presented and the author has obviously done their research, so good points for that.

3.0 out of 5 stars Healthy recipes, 26 Dec. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A good recipe book, but did not meet my hopes and expectations. The recipes mainly contained a fairly long list of ingredients with appropriate preparation time. To be honest, this does not fit in with my lifestyle and i required more simple recipes which would not take much preparation.

A friend recommended another book more suitable to my needs and the above will either sit on a shelf or be passed on to a friend who prefers to take more time in the kitchen! Also most of the recipes cater for 4 people, so for myself or two of us I have to try to make suitable calculations. Please note, authors of this type of book, that you are not always catering for families of four!

The White Princess (COUSINS' WAR)
The White Princess (COUSINS' WAR)
by Philippa Gregory
Edition: Hardcover

4.0 out of 5 stars Pleasant reading, 13 Oct. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I love medieval history and usually stick to history books rather than novels, but i enjoyed the White Queen television series so decided to read the White Princess afterwards.

It is good bedtime reading and Ms Gregory describes the medieval atmosphere well, but i did find parts of the book rather repetitive and Elizabeth herself came over as indecisive and it is difficult to imagine a queen of that period having such an indeterminate character. The Plantaganets were all reknown for having strong characters which are obvious when you read chroniclers of that period. However, i can understand it can be more difficult to guage the personalities of the women because they did not have the scrutinity given to medieval men!

i would recommend this book to friends, especially to those interested in the Wars of the Roses and how the Tudors started their Rule.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very worthwhile read!, 6 Aug. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
King Richard III is beautifully portrayed in this book, with great honesty and sensitivity, and rightly so. All Ms. Tannahill's books are to be respected but The Seventh Son is a particular joy to read, and a must for all Ricardians! She has an easy way of involving you in the time and period and the art of encouraging you to read on - yes a real 'page turner'!

I had anticipated a more detailed view of life in York in this period, but found the story very predictable and dull and gave up half way through the book. It needed sparkle and panache!

2.0 out of 5 stars Too biased for me, 31 July 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
What an imposing cover to this book! It looked wonderful and i started reading it with great anticipation. Sadly as it progressed I felt Mr. Skidmore's views were biased and he was writing the same old Tudor 'chestnuts' about King Richard iii and my enjoyment became irritation. A pity, it is an intriguing battle - and subject to write about. Anyhow, i did not finish the book. Primarily though, it is about the Tudors and no doubt those who favour them will take a vastly different view.
