3.0 out of 5 stars Mildly interesting, 18 Jun. 2014

This is an 'ok' compilation of Beatles interpretations overseen by the evergreen George Martin. Beatles songs are hard to cover as the originals are so firmly embedded in the psyche......however this contains one or two mildly amusing tracks (Jim Carey - I Am The Walrus) along with some half decent musical efforts (Jeff Beck and Phil Collins). And a joy to hear Martin's own Pepperland Suite which I've always enjoyed.
This is an album to put on when friends visit and enjoying the 'who the hell's that?; questions.

3.0 out of 5 stars HISTORICAL NECESSITY, 30 April 2014

This charts the (very) early days of the Fab 4 and as such as an aural document of their roots. It's interesting to note that in their later (solo) years all four of the Beatles released albums of rock'n'roll covers, and on their first four albums they matched their own material with plenty of energetically played rock'n'roll classics.
So, this collects together early rehearsals, the Hamburg days, early studio work, the Tony Sheridan days and their emergence as an unstoppable pop phenomenon. Much of it is for the completist only......the audio quality is understandably weak on much of the material and some of it is, well, just not very good.
My personal highlight is their exchange with Morcambe and Wise where Eric keeps calling Ringo, 'Bongo'. Priceless.

Humanary Stew: A Tribute to Alice Cooper

4.0 out of 5 stars IT PLEASED THIS COOP FAN, 1 April 2014

I'm not a huge fan of 'tribute' albums as they tend to water down the originals. This however is a glorious exception.
Not much to say really......it's some of Alice's best known songs played and sung by members of Guns'n'Roses, Megadeth etc etc. and it really works. The songs are full of bite and (to my ears) give a real boost to some overly familiar material.
Highly recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Unimaginative interpretations by the Fab 12, 27 Mar. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought this expecting one of 2 things........either a Wagnerlike powerful Germanic assault on the Beatles back catalogue, full of swooping droopy chords and powerful ensemble bowing.......OR an imaginative reinterpretation of some of the greatest tunes ever written, by immensely talented musicians toying with the main themes, circling and snatching titbits to twist into delightfully skewed mimicry.
......but sad to report it's neither. It's 12 cellists playing some middle of the road Beatles songs in a rather middle of the road fashion with next to no vim or vigour in either the playing or the scoring.
Should be 2.5 stars cos it's OK, but I don't like it.

This is a muddy recording of Alice Cooper (the band) live WAAAAY before he'd adopted his 'horror' persona. There are a couple of tracks which are recognisable from the band's first album and a couple of tracks that aren't Alice Cooper at all.
I own everything by Alice and as a completist I had to have this but it won't be playing in my living room very often.
Let's be kind and call it an important historical recording.
