5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant short stories again, 14 Nov. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Cockfosters (Hardcover)
I've waited for this book to come out, having read the authors previous ones published at intervals. Being the same age as the author means that each book has mirrored my own life - Hey Yeah Get a Life was a life-saver when I was a young mum, trying to keep toddlers safe, trying to talk a full sentence to friends.
This new collection resonates just as much. I'd read Erewhon when it was published in Granta, and shared it with my teenage daughters, who loved it. I find myself still 'reversing' the gender of characters even now when I read books, to see what the world looks like that way. Such a simple and powerful idea.
The story told around the baking of a birthday cake made me cry, and that shows the true power of the short story. I LOVE this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing, 17 Mar. 2013
This is one of the most beautiful thoughtful books on loss and grief, and survival, that Ive ever read. I so wish that the author had not had to write it. But I think that it was ultimately hopeful, and reflective, and I learned so much from it. I felt a sense of loss too when it was finished, loss of the thoughts of a great mind and spirit. I want to wish the author well, and let her know that her work has meant we can bear witness to her loss, but also share memories of her family with her.

5.0 out of 5 stars An amazing book, 15 Nov. 2011
This is one of the most fantastic books Ive seen of its kind. Its perfect for Harry Potter fans but also great for students of film making, fashion design, product design, photography etc. Its huge and has a mass of new information on each page plus beautiful photography and illustrations. Its easily worth the price being offered on Amazon, and its a really great christmas present that all ages would enjoy looking at. Its actually nearly as magical as the books are, just looking into the imagination of JK Rowling and the clever people who worked on these films.

5.0 out of 5 stars She is so good!, 10 Jun. 2011
This a return to form for Helen Simpson - not that any of her books of short stories are anything short of wonderful - but this spoke to me the way "Hey Yeh Right, Get a Life" did, when I had small children. Pefect short story writing, such an fantastic art form in her hands. Not a word overused, each sentence so thought provoking. Incredible to feel so immersed in the characters lives within a few phrases. I'll remember these little stories for a long time. PS Night Thoughts, published in Granta 115 makes it worth the purchase price alone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Time to revisit the "F" word, 10 Jun. 2011
This review is from: Granta 115: The F Word (Paperback)
Buy this book for the Helen Simpson story alone - a few pages of sheer genius. Each word and sentence beautifully and simply constructed. Cry at the final sentence, read some more of this thoughtful book, and get active in the struggle for gender equality.

5.0 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY YORK TESTS, 2 Jun. 2011
Despite paid endorsements by "celebrity" doctors and charities such as Allery UK, who should be ashamed, there is NO scientific clear proven evidence that these tests work. Look at the WHICH report of food allergy testing and the House Of Lords recommendations that GPs do not advise them. If they worked, they'd be available on the NHS. These tests play into ill peoples fears and hopes for a way of feeling better. Theyre a scam frankly, identical blood tests sent in different names have shown different " results".

5.0 out of 5 stars What a beautiful book, 26 May 2011
As already mentioned in reviews, this is a booklovers dream, for the production alone - it looks and smells and feels like a quality read. And it is of course, with such a fascinating subject to work with. Interesting, informative, magical and naughty.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a joy, 10 April 2011
This is the most beautiful book. The illustrations are perfect and the quirky text is great fun. I would recommend this book to princesses of all ages but especially for over 10's. It is amusing and engaging, and made for a lovely hour of escapism.

4.0 out of 5 stars Deceptive charm, 2 Jan. 2010
This review is from: Brooklyn (Hardcover)
If the measure of a good novel is one that stays with you, then this book would have won the awards it missed out on. Its deceptively simple to read, yet the descriptions and feelings it evokes, are hard to shake. I was hanging in for the ending, and its a book Id recommend to all generations. It is old fashioned storytelling, doesnt try to be clever, and evokes emotions because of it. I think it quietly creates images that will stay with the reader. Perfect christmas reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars beautiful book, 30 Dec. 2009
This review is from: The Seeing Stick (Hardcover)
This book is beautiful. I bought it after seeing an illustration for a different work by the artist in a national newspaper. Its a lovely story, but its the illustrations that made it so special. They are wonderful, and the artist is clearly so talented. Ive read so many childrens books over the years to my two children, and this is as special as the works of Christian Birmingham or PJ Lynch or Shirley Hughes. I'll certainly look out for more work illustrated by Daniela Terrazzini.
