Verified Purchase(What is this?)
An excellent book for anyone interested in the history of the British in India. The price of the second-hand book was very low, and its condition really excellent - in fact as good as new, except only for some (entirely inoffensive) library marks.

3.0 out of 5 stars excellent, but..., 20 Mar. 2011
I think this would normally rate 5 stars - it is lovingly researched and annotated, well-illustrated with countless interesting pictures of people and records. The discographical work is also excellent, with separate sections for Jamaican, UK and US releases. BUT, there is one inexplicable omission: NO INDEX! In a reference book of this kind, it is an inexcusable error. Say I have in my collection this obscure LS Perry track, know the title but not the date or derivation. How can I find the info without an index?! I think the object-lesson of how to approach this type of thing is "The Earthly Recordings of Sun Ra" (Robert Campbell & Christopher Trent, 2nd ed.), dealing with an even more complicated discography: there are separate indexes for album titles, song titles and musicians, enabling all kinds of cross-reference.

3.0 out of 5 stars partial success, 12 Nov. 2010
The dictionary does a good job with the technical terms I think, though as another reviewer noted, a new edition could offer more unfamiliar words and perhaps pictures alongside each entry, where appropriate. There is a useful timeline of the Napoleonic era at the end, and the pictures are attractive.
However, I expected but did not find detailed historical and geographical background to each story in the Aubrey/Maturin series. There is almost no such content at all. In fact, there are surprisingly few references to the books themselves and the plots.
