5.0 out of 5 stars Masterpiece., 23 Feb. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Seven Samurai (Amazon Video)
This should hold a higher rating on Amazon Prime Instant Video. Disregard the low ratings of 1 and 2 stars as it was pretty much given due to the poor DVD quality from BFI.

This movie truly is a masterpiece. My original review in 2006 gives a synopsis of the story and my overall thoughts of the movie.

Classic Kurosawa, 15 Sept. 2006
"A village constantly terrorised by bandits enlist the aid of Samurais to help them defend their homes.

Not only is this a tale about honour and heroism, but it is a tale of social divide between Samurai (a status of upmost importance and somewhat royalty) and peasant (base class of Japan). We need to be told that what ever family you were born into, that is the profession you would take upon adulthood. So if you were born to a farmer, it would a farmer's life for you. Born into nobility of a Samurai, than a Samurai you would be.

The relationship between the Samurais hired and the peasants I believe is the focal point of the story. From the peasants absolute gratitude for Samurais who would help them for a pittance to gradual resentment of the Samurai presence in the village.

Despite the age of the film, it is arguably one of the best action films ever made.

Shot in Black & White (come on it was 1954 afterall) and in Japanese (with English subtiles), it doesn't diminish the superiority of the film's story, characters and setting.

The superiority of the film is emphasised even more when it was made into the multibox office hit western "The Magnificent Seven" (although in my eyes "Seven Samurai" is still head and shoulders above this remake).

Kurosawa's work are timely classics. From "Hidden Fortress" to later films like "Kagemusha", Kurosawa's depiction of this almost forgotten world are ones to behold.

Excellent."

5.0 out of 5 stars Quality compact camera at a great price!, 4 Jan. 2012
My old camera is a 5 year old 6 megapixels Sony Cybershot. Since I've not used it due to having good quality camera phones, I've never been bothered to buy a new one. As it was the New Year I decided to purchase myself a new one.

Was tempted to go for a Canon Ixus, but the price they were offering for this little gem was too good to pass (as from 01 Jan 2012).

Lovely compact camera and for £64.99 (black casing) it's absoloutely fantastic for value! The same specification camera but in a different colour does increase the price, so be weary if you're about to buy one (Silver @£88.04 / Blue @ £89.99 / Pink @£104.99).

Picture quality is crisp and clear (14megapixels), with a large 3" LCD display screen. The flash helped produce good quality photo in the night.

If you're looking to compare quality compact cameras at a low price, this is certainly the one to beat.

4.0 out of 5 stars Slapstick comedy from HK Star, Stephen Chow, 22 Nov. 2006
More commonly known for his slapstick kung fu movies such as "Kung Fu Hustle" and "Shaolin Soccer", this film slightly deviates from the kung fu.

Stephen Chow plays a struggling actor, Wan Tin-sau, doing all he can to make it in movies. Run ins with the leading lady, directors, casting crew and even the luncheon supervisor make it difficult for him to make it big. His dedication is admirable, however it seems no matter how hard he tries he can't seem impress.

Away from the movies, Wan works as what could be said as an activities supervisor for his apartment block. Also to help ends meet he gives out acting tuition to those he can persuade. Of his clients, a trio of wannabe triads and a group of club girls, one of whom becomes an somewhat difficult love interest.

A great movie to watch if you're looking for more Stephen Chow features. The slapstick is plentiful along with mixture of drama and romance, there's even a cameo appearance from Jackie Chan as another actor who pips Chow's character to a movie role.

5.0 out of 5 stars A classic series to be watched by all anime fans, 14 Feb. 2006
In this world alchemy and somewhat advanced Victorian style technology, the laws of equivilant exchange demand that you cannot gain something without sacrificing something of equal importance.
After a failed attempt in trying to ressurect their deceased mother through alchemy (an illegal and very dangerous process), Edward and Alphonse Elric are lucky to escape with their lives. Alphonse left without a body has his soul transferred into a nearby suit of armour, by his elder brother, Edward, who loses an arm and a leg in the process.
The series takes us on their journey, in recovering their former states. Edward works hard into becoming a State Alchemist and learn more in the arts of Alchemy. A moving tale that shows the brother's admiration and love for each other, overcoming powerful users of alchemy and corruption within the State itself.
A fantastic tale that will make you laugh, cry and shudder as you join the brothers in their adventures. The characters are very well structured, even characters that do not remain in the whole series are written with depth that it is hard not to feel attached to some of them.
Excellent art work and a catchy soundtrack bubblegum pop soundtrack. If there's one anime series you'll want to see this year, make sure that its this one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Blows your mind, 11 Jan. 2006
A friend recently traveled to Japan and brought me back a copy of this anime series.
The series follows high school student, Kei Kurono, whose life is ended after saving a hobo from the tracks of a subway station with an old childhood friend, Masaro Kato, whom he has not seen for sometime.
However instead of actually dying they are transported to an apartment room where other recently deceased. Kei and Kato befriend one of the other people in the room with them and from there an interesting love triangle begins.
At first thinking, they believe they are waiting to go into heaven. But they soon learn that it is another power that has led them there. That "power" is Gantz.
Gantz, although unknown in origin, is a black spere that hosts an unconscious (in appearance) human within it. It could be argued thatGantz is either from the future or some sort of alien life form.
There they are sent out into what seems to be some sort of game of death. The chosen must capture/kill a specific alien named by Gantz in a given time period. They are aided with futuristic weaponery that would make GI Joe weep with envy. For example the battle suit that heightens their strength and agility.
Will our heroes get out of this alive? And what will happen when the "game" is finally over? One way to find out is to purchase this classy series and enjoy it as much as I have done.
The "15" certificate is justified with the amount of gore, violence and nudity it shows, however a must see for older anime fans and the like.
