4.0 out of 5 stars reeves has a good voice with a clear ability to paint her picture ..., 1 Oct. 2016
a stark and vivid read, reeves has a good voice with a clear ability to paint her picture - the first third being engaging but the last third just superb so worth working through the middle doldrums. homage to harper lee?

5.0 out of 5 stars shame it had to end…, 14 Jun. 2014
This review is from: The Luminaries (Hardcover)
a thoroughly entertaining and captivating read, it seemed a shame it had to end! i found it a modern day tolstoy in its own way, plenty of style and substance, and without being caught up in its own cleverness. its rare a book captivates me enough to want to do nothing but read it, and once i'd reached a certain way into the story, found it effortless.

This review is from: Parade's End [DVD] (DVD)
it is hard to find fault with this adaptation - the entire is certainly greater than the sum of its parts. the acting is faultless, the pace and direction superb and the edwardian detail make it a real must see - thank you bbc!!

2.0 out of 5 stars toe curling in the extreme, 7 Feb. 2013

love verdi? love maggie smith? love tom courtney?
this is a film of the play by the same name but without the story line or the punch. you know a bad film when it would be more captivating had the brilliant cast been asked to improvise instead - billy connolly would certainly have been a great deal more convincing! the script was painfully mundane, every camera shot pedestrian, and the poor actors were left to act themselves out of a paper bag - or a care home - or a damp squib. only dame gwyneth jones truly and gloriously shone, though tom courtney did a convincing job as a character robbed of his main storyline. there was none of the stillness or depth one would have hoped for in even a light hearted comedy on old age. the final concert performances with credits were the one true and honest contribution to an otherwise mediocre experience for me, and i was left feeling very sorry indeed for all the stars - actors and retired performers alike.

3.0 out of 5 stars For Michael Kitchen fans, 23 Nov. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Dandelion Dead [DVD] (DVD)
I feel like I have been watching quite a different dvd to other reviewers! Being a Michael Kitchen and a Sarah Miles fan was still not quite enough to help me through to the end, and I have never knowingly given up early before. Both Michael Kitchen and Sarah Miles are fantastic, and I found the adaptation painted a wonderfully claustrophobic and utterly tedious atmosphere - so much so that I wanted to scream "get me out of here!". So either a very clever or a rather pedestrian affair - you decide!

Among the Mad
Among the Mad
by Jacqueline Winspear
Edition: Paperback
Price: £8.99

4.0 out of 5 stars utterly engaging, 28 Aug. 2012
This review is from: Among the Mad (Paperback)
don't be put off by the awful 'chick lit' cover - this and winspear's other books in the series are an intelligent take on the private investigator circa 1931. what makes her writing stand head and shoulders above the rest is her ability to captivate and to create 'real' people in her stories, whilst not over egging the custard ... for those who love kate atkinson's books in the similar vein.

1.0 out of 5 stars doesn't get much worse than this, 17 May 2012
This review is from: Labyrinth (Paperback)
oh dear, what a shame, this feels to me like a first attempt after having attended a writing course. the writing is turgid and laboured, the structure and plot simplistic. i love the cathars and the south of france (who doesn't?) so i took the book on holiday to france, but even this did not help me wade through what had been widely promoted as a quality read - and ultimately my main upset is that the book is just laughably pretentious. certainly not for the discerning, but perhaps it is the sort of thing i read as a 13 year old. so maybe the general outrage is due to its staggering promotional success?

The Labours of Hercules: Twelve Hercule Poirot Mysteries

5.0 out of 5 stars i say - well done hastings!, 24 April 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
narrated by hugh fraser, the twelve tales are intelligent and highly entertaining in this audiobook format as hugh fraser brings to life christie's characters so exceedingly well, and without labouring the point so to speak! the result is a seamless and refreshing 7 CDs, and i would add that it is probably now my favourite of all the poirot audios alongside 'evil under the sun' so a desert island must hear for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars wonderful if flawed, 21 Dec. 2011
The Pros; immensely powerful, incredibly quiet, no over-heating, great staying power, very efficient and effective whisks and motor, firm and stable, rubberised handle, great controls, classic design.
The Cons; heavy (tho so stable it can be rested on bowl), shortish lead (i now use an extension cable), silly cable storage that doesn't quite work with cable coming out of base at "6 o'clock" so gets in way of bowl - shame (i now use it with the cord half wound to come out at "12 o'clock").
But I love it.
