Brilliant book, second in the series and a must read for anyone who likes historical fiction. Bernard Cornwell brings the Anglo Saxon age to life with interesting characters and good plots based on actual events.

This really is a magnificent tale well told. If you have seen the TV series don't worry, the book brings it into new and much better focus.

This is the first of a magnificent series of books based around the creation of England. After reading this book I carried on with others in the series and found them all to be equally hard to put down.

An unusual and interesting story and a marked contrast to those of pilots who flew on the allied side. Strongly recommended

2.0 out of 5 stars Misleading Title, 26 Aug. 2013

This review is from: Tempest Pilot (Paperback)
I bought this book expecting an account of the experience of a WW2 tempest pilot but what the book gives you is mostly an account of the what pilots got up to release the strain of dangerous flying to when on the ground and off duty . It may be entertaining and interesting but it isn't an account of operational flying.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good read for any WW2 aviation buff, 29 Mar. 2013

I'm an aviation history buff and found this book interesting and a change from most others available, even if only because it covers events in southern Europe rather than the main western front. The only drawback was the rather dry presentation and limied detail on combats; in too many palces it ead like a combat report rather than a story.

4.0 out of 5 stars An interesting twist on dark age events, 29 Mar. 2013

I first read this book 30 odd years ago and enjoyed it. Still good today but I'd have to concede the writing style is rather old fashioned and the story far fetched, but entertaining and thought provoking none the less. Other good Duggan books are Knight with Armour and Count Bohemond.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good read for any aviation history buff, 29 July 2012

The early part of the book dealing with Johnson's youth and training are a little slow and long winded, but once the he reaches the UK it provides a great insight into the build up of the 8th AF fighter force and the battles fought and won. It is also a very interesting read. If you have read similar books written by RAF pilots you will find this book evidences the differences between the UK and USA approaches.
