1.0 out of 5 stars Turgid, 25 April 2013
This review is from: The Light and the Dark (Hardcover)
I kept hoping but gave up after 120 pages of turgid, commonplace prose. Letters are letters, and these are not especially insightful. I become more and more amazed and off-put by the number of weighty reviews in advance that are used to clobber the reader of books just out. Interestingly, on the current US Amazon site this book is advertised but not yet available. But the site carries various glowing newspaper reviews while preventing any reader from saying what he or she thinks.

The Great Crash 1929 (Penguin Business)
The Great Crash 1929 (Penguin Business)
by John Glabraith
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Prophetic, 28 Dec. 2009
This is a very well written and entertaining book about the recurrent nature of human folly. Written in the 1950s, it forewarns of the possibility of another economic collapse when those who lived through the 1929 experiences are dead. Witty, incisive, informative, it is a model of good academic writing and is accessible to those of us who are not economists. If only the financial "regulators" of many countries had read it and taken it to heart five years ago.

5.0 out of 5 stars an incredible album, 16 Feb. 2006
This review is from: Skvettir Edik A Ref (Audio CD)
This is a really beautiful album, lovely and warm. I'm a fan of Mogwai and Sigur Ros but I think this is probably better than anything both those bands have ever done. Not that it sounds really like them but they're the closest comparison I can think of. Its a very slow moving album. Don't buy it if you're impatient but, like much great music, give it time and it will grow on you. Really its hard to do justice to this album in words but I'll try to describe it a bit. Well firstly, its all instrumental. The guitar riffs on it are incredible and the bass is great too. The slow sweeping synth and orchestra sounds on it are amazing. Most of the tracks are around 8 minutes or so long but they never get boring and if they were any shorter it would take something away from their beauty. There's not too many albums I'd give 5 stars to but this has to be one of them
