Scintilla [DVD]
Scintilla [DVD]
Dvd ~ John Lynch
Price: £11.04

3.0 out of 5 stars DON'T BRING A SYRINGE TO A GUN FIGHT, 2 Mar. 2015
This review is from: Scintilla [DVD] (DVD)
A group of 8 mercenaries break into an isolated secret Eastern Block facility on a mission to obtain/destroy a project deep inside a maze. The film is marketed as "Scintilla" and "The Hybrid." It isn't hard to figure out from the titles and DVD cover we are talking about some kind of human hybrid. Yes and PLOT SPOILER EXPLANATION OF FILM the DNA they cross humans with comes from a 2.4 billion year old meteor found in the Soviet permafrost. Forgetting the fact DNA breaks down, they cross it with human DNA and plan on getting an offspring from two hybrids that is more alien than human because....we can.

The characters were fine. I wish they had expanded them a bit more. Their entrance into the facility was good scene and started the feature off with promise. The maze wasn't too bad, but they could have made that better and the last third which was hurt by low budget.

Guide: F-bomb. No sex or nudity.

Price: £9.86

4.0 out of 5 stars RUNNING IS THE KEY TO SURVIVAL, 2 Mar. 2015
This review is from: ZOMBIEWORLD (DVD)
This film is the "Groove Tube" of Zombie films. It consists of a newscast reporting on outbreaks in different parts of the world making for a disjointed film. Places include, Ireland, U.S., Australia, Canada, and Spain. They are all short subjects . There was even a good episode from West Virginia that didn't have a zombie. I enjoyed the public service announcements especially the guy killing zombies with a bicycle seat. The first episode was my favorite, it was in Spanish as Jesus raised the dead causing the first zombie outbreak. Jesus and his side kick Judas must fight off peasant, Roman, and cowboy zombies with fish in an over-the-top episode. Unfortunately the film didn't stay at this level and many episodes were just disappointing such as Ireland, the Cam episode, and even Australia.

The zombies range from foot dragging brain lovers, to fast running intestine eaters.

This is a hit and miss film. Walmart $9.96 I liked it but don't recommend it if you got to pay for it.

Guide: F-bomb. No sex or nudity. Troma style body parts, gore, and blood splatter.

Nazi Vengeance [DVD]
Nazi Vengeance [DVD]
Dvd ~ Mark Drake
Price: £7.00

3.0 out of 5 stars I ONLY DESIRE RETRIBUTION, 2 Mar. 2015
This review is from: Nazi Vengeance [DVD] (DVD)
Ralphie (Mark Drake) has bad dreams and undergoes life regression conducted by his friend Claudia (Rosie Akerman) reading from a book. Unlike most people undergoing regression and being the King of Atlantis, he was a Nazi. He was involved in a project called "Operation Community" which was designed to create terror in England prior to the invasion. Meanwhile Ralphie's girlfriend Andrea (Sophie Barker) a Brighton girl, is cheating with Lucas (Miles Jovian) who is Chloe's boyfriend,

Ralphie's visions takes them to a rural area of England as they search for his past life and giving Lucas and Andrea to do their rabbit thing. In a subplot, there is a unseen man contacting demons(?) through a black mirror with Nazi symbols so he can enact revenge. The two come together in a slightly unexpected manner resulting in a torture scene that was so-so.

The film incorporates a unique script, but fails to deliver the goods. The intensity wasn't felt. And PLOT SPOILER what was that scene where we see Lucas' junk as he is clearly naked, and then later he is wearing underwear? Plot continuity. Please.

Guide: F-bomb, sex, brief Miles Jovian's junk.

Blackwood [DVD]
Blackwood [DVD]
Dvd ~ Ed Stoppard
Price: £8.00

3.0 out of 5 stars CHECK THIS FOR BLOOD, 2 Mar. 2015
This review is from: Blackwood [DVD] (DVD)
Professor Ben Marshall (Ed Stoppard) has had some pyschological issues that appear to be in the past. He starts lecturing at a new university and has acquired the old estate Blackwood where he lives with his wife Rachel (Sophia Myles) and son Harry (Isaac Andrews). Ben starts to see and hear things and wonders if he is having a relapse or is he seeing ghosts. Ben become obsessed with the ghosts and believes he has the answer in an unsolved murder.

I admit the film did give an unexpected twist. The problem was the characters were not overly likeable, especially Ben the main character. The story had no real protagonist, a mystery, and a ghost story that wasn't horrifying.

Guide: No nudity. 3 F-bombs. Attempted rape. Not a bad story, but I would rather watch "The Shining" for the umpteenth time.

Tracers [DVD]
Tracers [DVD]
Dvd ~ Taylor Lautner
Price: £15.99

2.0 out of 5 stars THE BIKE IS A BALL AND CHAIN, 1 Mar. 2015
This review is from: Tracers [DVD] (DVD)
Cam (Taylor Lautner) is a NYC bike messenger. He owes the Chinese mafia money and his bicycle just got wreaked by Nikki (Marie Avgeropoulos) an aloof parkopur (free running urban acrobats) beauty. Cam, who is athletic, trains himself and joins the group lead by Miller (Adam Rayner). The group does more than run as they rob bad guys which creates issues.

Everyone in the group seems to have a lame secret they hide. The plot is thin as the film is consumed with kids running and jumping. If you are into parkour, this film should have appeal to you, but for an old couch potato, there really isn't much to see.

Guide: Love scene. No F-bombs or nudity.

Price: £6.71

1.0 out of 5 stars SEEK AND YE SHALL FIND, 1 Mar. 2015
This review is from: DIAMOND RUFF (DVD)
Diamond Ruff (Fredro Starr) grew up an orphan in the tough streets of Hartford. He has become a successful scam artist, performing Mission Impossible stuff. In spite of having tons of cash scamming people, he decides he must perform a poorly conceived armed bank robbery. During the robbery a cop (same one who shot his mom) kills the hostage in front of dozens of other cops and successfully frames Diamond who gets convicted and goes to jail for murder. While in jail we get some spiritual stuff. Diamond tries to clear himself of the murder charge because if he does he will be immediately released from prison because armed robbery is apparently a wrist slap in Connecticut.

None of the plot made any sense. The story seemed to center around bad white cops lying and framing poor innocent bank robbing, kidnapping black men with murder. Throw in a Bible verse or two and we get a really sad story of redemption.

I have no idea where these rave reviews come from. Bad plot, worse acting. Camera work and sound seemed professional enough for a low budget indie.

Guide: F-bomb. No sex or nudity.

The Shift
The Shift
Price: £3.49

5.0 out of 5 stars DO NOT RECOVER, 1 Mar. 2015
This review is from: The Shift (Amazon Instant Video)
Kayle (Leo Oliva-writer) is a veteran male ER nurse who pops pills to help him in his hectic routine. Floyd (Danny Glover) forces Kayle to instruct newbie Amanda (Casey Fitzgerald) who finished top in her class. Amanda discovers that things are more rigorous than expected. Kayle takes his job seriously, feeling for his patient's wishes over that of the family which creates issues.

This is a gritty well acted hospital drama that deals with the suffering and terminally ill.

Guide: No swearing, sex, or nudity.

The Coven [DVD]
The Coven [DVD]
Dvd ~ Dexter Fletcher
Price: £15.99

2.0 out of 5 stars I AM THE GOD OF HELL FIRE, 28 Feb. 2015
This review is from: The Coven [DVD] (DVD)
A group of five girls, none of which is Fairuza Balk, opt to go spend Halloween on the local Queens Wood lot which was used as a coven location. It was last used by Uri Clef because Louis Cypher was already taken. Two guys who are introduced with the film half over also jump the fence and go there and together the initial of the collective first names spell out "Lucifer" as if that means something. Meanwhile someone on a bike, who may or may not be Nicolas Cage, is in the woods going after the kids.

Yes the whole film was a build up to the girls going to the woods, crowding together in a tent, then running around with a couple of boys. No real special effects other than that CG fire thing. I kept waiting for things to happen then they rolled the credits which claimed the local coven attempted to keep them from shooting there. It is ashamed they didn't succeed.

Guide: F-bomb. No sex. No nudity. No Fairuza Balk. Be careful quoting Arthur Brown. 1 1/2 STARS

1.0 out of 5 stars I'M A BAPTIST., 28 Feb. 2015
Sheldon Marcus (Nicholas Gourdine) is a shy geeky poorly dressed computer genius who works for $12.50 answering phones. One night when media mogul Jonathan Xander (Dylan Christian) is publicly speaking for free to about a crowd of a dozen people, Sheldon interrupts and shows him that he is wrong. Xander sabotages Sheldon's life and forces him to work for him making in an hour what he used to earn in a week. Sheldon is supposed to run a social web site where people air their political views, are categorized, placed in groups of like people and are specifically marketed to, and possibly manipulated. Jonathan is a mover and shaker with all the world's power at his fingertips...At least I think that was the plot.

Jonathan is a crazy, a bit like Brad Pitt in "12 Monkeys" crazy. He is a heavy drinker, rubs his nose like he does coke, hurts people, and can't act. The supporting cast likewise had bad actors. The dialogue was fairly bad as the message of the film of media dominance controlling democratic outcome is lost. The only person who had decent lines was the air headed girlfriend which went something like this...."She said I was antagonistic, I told her I am not antagonistic, I'm a Baptist. She is so stupid." I did like the film when she was on the screen.

In additional to questionable acting, the low budget prevented decent sound equipment. The indoor sound had an faint echo to it. For a media millionaire, Jonathan had a modest office and staff. The plot loses the message.

Guide: No swearing, sex, or nudity.

Territory 8 (2014) [Import]
Territory 8 (2014) [Import]
Dvd ~ Michael A. Tushaus

Price: £24.99

1.0 out of 5 stars YOU HAVE A CURE!, 28 Feb. 2015
This review is from: Territory 8 (2014) [Import] (DVD)
The film opens like a Chines fire drill as "White Agent" is released from the Hawthorn Wallis defense contractor plant. The camera jerks around, objects go in and out of focus and fonts have a blank line cut through the middle of them. We know this is serious stuff. We then move to a secure Hawthorn Wallis plant where Eli (Michael A. Tushaus) and Cho (Heung Wong) are working on a "cure" and practicing their lines. Cho speaks some lines in Chinese to a guy with Star Trek collar insignias over the Internet. I guess he is some kind of spy, no subscripts. Survivors from the White Agent release are irate as their lungs fill up with liquid and they die..."They killed my Auntie!" Whoops wrong film.

The film centers on two characters and most of the action takes place in one facility. The acting...well there was one scene that wasn't too bad. I couldn't feel the intensity as they used a generic sound track and bad dialogue to make us feel intensity. On the plus side they never used a voice enhancer, the scenes were centered and I never recalled seeing a microphone. The sound never cut in and out either so in many ways this was superior in quality to a lot of low budget indie messes out there that look like High School projects. However, It wasn't entertaining to watch two guys who can't act run around a concrete building for half the film.

No swearing, sex, or nudity. Minor blood and violence.
