The Scent of Rain
The Scent of Rain
by Josef Lewies
Edition: Paperback
Price: £7.99

5.0 out of 5 stars An absolutely cracking read, 25 Nov. 2015
This review is from: The Scent of Rain (Paperback)
This is an absolute cracking read. The Scent of Rain is a collection of short but enthralling stories from Botswana that fall into two broad categories: a) Life in Botswana, and b) Stories about the creation of the land and its animals (that reminded me a bit of Aesop's Fables). Some of the stories are a mixture of a) and b).
Josef writes with an easy to read, free-flowing style that gives the perfect amount of description to allow the reader to conjure up the images in his mind. He also writes with a gentle humour that is somehow comforting. Not only does he get over to the reader the vastness and beauty of Botswana, but he also (with great skill) describes the isolation farmers lived in on a daily basis. Nothing sums this up as beautifully as "Intermission". I'll leave you to read it in its full glory.
At £7.99, The Scent of Rain (with its beautiful, hardback cover) is well worth every single penny and would be a welcome addition to anyone's bookshelf.

5.0 out of 5 stars The true story of one woman's hellish journey through a succession of abusive relationships. A must read for men and women., 9 Dec. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
KC Barnard's frank and honest account of her time in a string of abusive relationships makes for tough reading, but she has an important story to tell.
It is beautifully written and, if it wasn't for the uneasy subject matter ... if she was writing about something more pleasent, I'd call it a page turner. However, domestivc violence and domestic abuse are not easy to read about, and seeing this fun, intelligent woman be dragged though the hell she describes is not nice. But what she does is describe in detail how the men who abused her started off as loving people, but slowly turned into monsters.
It is a sign of her inner strength that each time she managed to leave the relationship. Not only that, it is a book that should be read by anyone who is suffering from abuse in the home of any form. It shows that it is possible to escape and that there is help out there if you can muster the strength to seek it out.
You'll read it from cover to cover. At times you may feel uneasy about what you're reading, or even sick at times. I even wept at her plight. But when you've finished reading the final page, you'll be wiser, stronger and better equipped to see the warning signs, or (if you're already in a similar relationship) to know that it is possible to find the strength to leave your abuser and begin a better life.
A must read for both men and women.

5.0 out of 5 stars Blows like a demon eating beans., 4 Nov. 2014
Purchased this heater for the office (approx 5m x 5m and 2.2m high) (a wooden chalet at the bottom of the garden). The heater was delivered quickly after order. I haven't got a Scooby when it comes to electricity and fitting these things, so I got an electrician to install it. He said it was a pretty straight forward job. Since installing it, I have been delighted with its performance. It gets up to temperature as quick as you like and blows hot air like a demon eating beans. After ten minutes, the office is nice and toasty and I can switch it off. Great stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best culinary books on the market., 7 Oct. 2013

This review is from: The Country Kitchen (Paperback)
This book explains in clear easy terms many traditional methods of making food including cheeses, sun-drying fruit and veg, beer, and smoking foods (including building your own smoker).
I've had my copy for twenty-odd years and still use it. I bought this copy for my sister.
If you want to move away from processed foods, or shop-bought produce, and into creating your own without all of those chemicals and additives, this is the book for you.

The Animator's Survival Kit: A Manual of Methods, Principles and Formulas for Classical, Computer, Games, Stop Motion and Internet Animators
by Richard Williams

5.0 out of 5 stars A book for all abilities, 7 Oct. 2013

I bought this for my nephew who wants to go on to university to study animation. He already makes films and games and is pretty well versed in may things animationwise. He loves this book. He said its already taught him new things as well as improved what he already knew raising his game even further. That alone makes it well worth the price.
However, I did a bit of research before buying this book and I found that it was a mainstay for undergraduates, post graduates and those already forging a career in the animation business. That makes it a keeper.
If you're looking for a book for someone who works in animatio, regardless of their ability, this is the book for you.

Practical Weight Training
Practical Weight Training

2.0 out of 5 stars Out dated. OK for beginner., 16 April 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book was first published in 1995, that's seventeen years ago. It is testiment to the author that many of the work out techniques depicted are still relevant today. However, others are outdated, some could even be classed as liable to cause injury (esp. some of the stomach exercises).
Another obvious weak point in this book is that there are no routines, with no reference to the importance of cross training (not doing the same excercises every day). It is just a collection of work outs for each muscle group. This leaves the reader having to put together their own routine. I'll leave it to you to decide if this is a good or bad thing.
It has a dietry advice section and handy tick boxes so that the reader can assess how healthily they are eating. However, nutritional knowledge has gone on in leaps and bounds over the last decade or so, leaving this section somewhat lacking in indepth information.
So, to sum up: If you are starting out on a 'get fit' regime, this may be a cheap book to begin with, but be warned. This book is now rather outdated and the reader has to be aware of the techniques it shows that may result in injury. These days there are better books on the market for people wishing to know how to go about improving their health and body shape.
