1.0 out of 5 stars Dreadful, 22 Oct. 2015

I'd one or two comments about this book - all bad, so I thought I'd try it. It is truly dreadful unless one likes ' shopping and killing ' as a genre .

1.0 out of 5 stars Rubbish, 8 Oct. 2015

This is the second of this type I've returned - uneven toasting as a result of inner elements getting barely warm whilst outer ones are red-hot. Once you could forgive, but twice.....?

4.0 out of 5 stars A good yarn, 4 Aug. 2015

A cracking yarn, a bit like Peter Carey's Illiewhacker but set in the 'wild west', and featuring an African American. A good read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Usual high quality, 21 Feb. 2015

Usual readable quality by Dominic Sandbrook. Always a page turner, he manages to get to the meat of the situation - both in politics and the social movements of the times.

4.0 out of 5 stars Phew!, 22 Feb. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A rip-roaring ride through the decline of British Industry over the last 60+ years. Stuffed full of facts and figures it is nevertheless a real page turner.
And who's to blame? well, everyone - Unions, Management, and Government. It's full of tales of unexpected consequences which would be quite funny if it wasn't so depressing.
I enjoyed the book, but not in the usual way. It left me feeling that anyone who thinks they can run a workforce, a business, or a country shouldn't be allowed to!

3.0 out of 5 stars Stick to non fiction Peter!, 18 Feb. 2014

This review is from: Three Brothers (Kindle Edition)
Not bad but a bit flat and simplistic - the three brother each occupying a definite, one dimensional space in the narrative.
His histories of London are better.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 18 Feb. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Maybe I've seen too many science fiction films starring 'Time machines' but this seemed bland and very sad. I was also disappointed by the anti-climactic ending.

The Rise and Fall of Senator Joe McCarthy
The Rise and Fall of Senator Joe McCarthy
Price: £16.18

4.0 out of 5 stars A worrying time, 18 Feb. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Joe McCarthy seems to have been a complete maverick; lying and cheating his way to the forefront of American politics in the 1950's. What an odious man he was - this book should be read by all aspiring politicians as a salutatory lesson in how not to use your energy. A well written book, literally a page-turner to find out what preposterous thing McCarthy was going to get up to next.

Great book - not much to it but one with a happy ending after a scary start. Wonderful how he gets inside the mind of a dog.

5.0 out of 5 stars Timeless, 30 Dec. 2013

I've read this book several times - and listened to the real-time Radio 4 production years ago. It is incredibly detailed without being schoolmasterish and the plot is riveting. Totally believable and worth a second (and third, etc) read.
