A Woman's Work
A Woman's Work
by Harriet Harman
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £16.59

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful And Inspiring Book, 21 Jun. 2017
This review is from: A Woman's Work (Hardcover)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Don’t think long, boring political tome - this biography is not like that. The writing is light, touching, though never really dwelling on Harman’s personal life, but seamlessly weaving her tale of a life spent not only in politics but also in the Women’s Movement. You can feel the energy just roll off the page! This is a book that will just keep you wanting to turn the pages and you’ll be surprised when you get to the epilogue that it’s been 380 pages.

She has had an amazing career in politics, beginning in 1982 when she stood as a candidate for Peckham whilst pregnant with her first child - a first in political circles! In all the great issues of the last 30 years she has been there with the other Movers and Shakers. But through it all she never forgot what she was trying to achieve: equal rights and better vistas for women. The National Childcare Strategy, The Equality Act, laws on domestic violence, women only selection lists for vacant constituencies, Harman led and supported them all.

Yet despite this, the writing is very modest, never boastful, more “we than I” and always ready to pay tribute to others who helped or advised. It is a warm book. I have never met Harman but you get a real sense of the person from this writing. And I liked her!

The conclusion is like no other biography I’ve read. Not a neat reflection on her achievements but rather a call to us all to do more and show solidarity and watchfulness not just with the women of Britain but with all those around the world.

What an amazing woman and what a wonderful and inspiring book.

A City Dreaming
A City Dreaming

5.0 out of 5 stars Quirky And Well Written, 19 Jun. 2017
This review is from: A City Dreaming (Hardcover)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This is not really a novel, more a series of stories about M and his life in the Big Apple.
Not that M is an ordinary mortal - far from it. He is well in with the Management - mostly. Nor does the Big Apple pay more than a glancing association with any bit of New York I’ve ever visited but all this makes for an exciting read!

Suspend disbelief, accept he does drugs - large quantities of them ceaselessly, and M is the man everyone turns to when bad things are about to happen. Keeping the balance between the two Queens of New York also seems to be M’s job, one he does with his usual aplomb.

This is a quirky and well written book with interesting characters, all drawn superbly by the writer. If M’s antics don’t sometimes make you laugh out loud you are a stronger person than I am. And as for the giant Turtle that must be coaxed back to sleep if Manhattan is not to go the way of Atlantis…..well what can I say?

Well worth a read if you enjoy this genre.

The Day I Lost You
The Day I Lost You
by Fionnuala Kearney
Edition: Paperback
Price: £7.99

5.0 out of 5 stars All Families Have Their Secrets, 18 Jun. 2017
This review is from: The Day I Lost You (Paperback)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
At first glance this seems like a novel about sad loss and then picking up the pieces to carry on for the sake of others. But this is far from the case. Jess is a divorcee whose only child is killed in a skiing accident. In the beginning Jess struggles to believe Anna is dead but when her body is recovered she has to accept the truth. Anna and her daughter Rose always lived with Jess but with Anna’s death, Rose’s father, Sean, decides to go for custody. What this opens up is the stuff that destroys families and Jess has cause to rue the day she decided to fight him.

This is a novel about loss, lies, taking things at face value only to have them blow up in your face. It is also a novel about love and how a mother’s love transcends everything. Love does well in this novel - whether it is Sean’s, his parents or Rose’s friend, Theo. They all help Jess to cope with the reality in the end.

This is a carefully crafted tale with Rose, in many ways the villain, sympathetically and generously drawn. The characterisation of family love is so well done the reader can only assume the writer herself is part of a wonderful family. But all families have their secrets and the ones in this novel are unexpected and explosive. A great tale!

BIC 2 Pack 8 g Coloured Glue Stick - Purple
BIC 2 Pack 8 g Coloured Glue Stick - Purple

5.0 out of 5 stars Handy And Colourful, 7 Jun. 2017
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
These are fairly standard glue sticks, similar in operation to Pritt-sticks if you are familiar with that brand ie You take the top off and swivel the base to make the stick rise clear of the housing and reverse the process when you have finished using it.

The idea off colouring the glue purple is not just to make it more aesthetically pleasing. It is very useful to be able to see where the glue has been applied, which is not so easy with clear glue. Very easy to wash off either skin or clothes which is a very useful feature. Have you ever tried to get rid of errant superglue!

Whilst pitched by the manufacturer as specifically for kids doing handicrafts, this has wider uses and is ideal for any job where a fix is needed, but the strength of the fix is not important - mainly with paper and cardboard.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Good Quality Product At A Reasonable Price, 26 May 2017
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
My wife tested these polishes and these are her thoughts.

This comes in an unusual twist shape bottle with a plain white cap. It contains 13.5 MLS of polish which is a fairly standard sizing. The polish applies very easily with its flattish, non clogging brush and dries very quickly to a high gloss shine. It has great depth of colour, even from one coat, and lasts really well in wear without chipping. Its drying speed ensures a smudge free quick apply and go for the very busy amongst us. The polish removes easily with lacquer remover.

Overall a good quality product at a reasonable price.

These are the colours I have tried:

Rock the Runway - A really vibrant and shiny bright red. Great with a red summer frock or shoes.

Make the Cut - This didn't look much in the bottle but on the nails it was a lovely shimmering shade of shiny silver. Great evening wear!

Style in Excess - A subtle pale lavender shade with a great shine. A nice summer colour.

Signature Smile - A great Coral colour. Lovely with a tan.

4.0 out of 5 stars Looks Great Despite The Colour Variation, 21 May 2017
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
As has been pointed out by others, the Amazon distribution system has gone a little awry as the brown model pufferfish has been distributed rather than the yellow one shown under the item.

Whilst the yellow version is more vibrant and eye catching, this is a fun item to place by your fish pond, or just as a garden ornament. It appears robust and well able to withstand the weather.

Unfortunately I cannot give any guidance as to which version of this you are likely to get if you order the puffer fish, so think twice if the colour is a major issue for you. Having said that we are perfectly happy with what we got and he certainly looks great by our fish pond!

5.0 out of 5 stars My New Favorite Jeans, 21 May 2017
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
These have quickly become my favourite jeans to wear. They are a really nice fit, being slim but not skinny, and are very comfortable; as I usually cycle to work, the stretch in them has been somewhat of a revelation, and they are as comfortable to cycle in as my sports shorts. They have a flattering wash, and the ink doesn't come off, as happens sometimes with new jeans; I've had no problems washing them either. Extremely satisfied; would buy again without hesitation.

Mick Morrison Men's Lonilo T-Shirt, White (Weiß Bedruckt 114), Medium
Price: £11.95

4.0 out of 5 stars Comfortable, Rather Loud Design, Good Value, 21 May 2017
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This t-shirt is a great stretchy material that is really comfortable to wear and seems to breathe well. The design isn't my favourite, as I usually go for plainer designs, and it's rather loud, but it looks good all the same. I'm also satisfied with the quality; the t-shirt seems to be finished well, with no loose threads or holes after several washes.

Fit was as expected - I took a medium and it fitted fine. Overall this represents good value for money and worth going for if the design appeals.

Price: £149.00

5.0 out of 5 stars Robust, Comfortable, Great Sound and Value For Money, 21 May 2017
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I have not tested V-Moda headphones before but I was aware of the brand. Although they have only been around for the last decade or so they have already built quite a reputation for producing impressive, all round quality headphones.

This set impressed. Out of the box there are an adequate range of accessories. V-Moda has included two cables, one with a microphone and one is the standard audio only cable. There is a standard adapter and a set of gunmetal shields which can be changed with the shields on the sides of the headphones. Very usefully a protective exoskeletal hard case is also included.

The first impressions are that these headphones are very solidly built and there have been no concessions on quality. It all feels very robust, from the strong cable to the shields at the back and even to the plastic and rubber elements all seem top quality. V-Moda emphasise their 'military level standards of construction' and quite rightly so. Design wise, the look is quite contemporary.

The sound should please even the most demanding of audiophiles, as well as the average listener such as myself. I thought the sound delivery was very clear and compared well with more expensive headphones which I have tried out throughout the range. The lack of sound leakage even at high volumes was remarkable. I also found them to be comfortable even with extended wear which is an important point for me.

Overall, I thought these headphones delivered a great deal and whilst they are not at the cheaper end, they compare very well with headphones costing a great deal more. I have no hesitation in recommending them.

Right Behind You (FBI Profiler)
Right Behind You (FBI Profiler)
by Lisa Gardner
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £8.65

5.0 out of 5 stars Blood Is Thicker Than Water, 17 May 2017
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Although I had read several Lisa Gardner novels, I had not come across the Quincy and Rainie books. Not that that matters at all with this novel as it very much does stand alone: no previous acquaintance or knowledge of the protagonists is anticipated by the writer.

Profilers Pierce Quincy and Rainie Connor have been fostering a young teenager, Sharlah Nash, whom they hope to soon adopt. She was separated, aged four, from her brother, Telly, following the death of their parents, a death for which Telly was responsible. It is thought, though, that he acted to protect his little sister and himself. Now Quincy and Rainie are involved in what looks like a spree murder. The first two victims were Telly's foster parents and the next at a local Gas station where Telly was identified as the killer on CCTV. Now it seems Telly is out to find his baby sister and whilst Rainie and Quincy are determined to keep her safe she seems determined to run to find him too.

This is a great psychological thriller with great stage setting and atmospheric detailing. The human main characters are all equally odd and antisocial but all the dogs in the story are very loveable. All characters are well drawn and developed but especially the Canines, Great stuff.

- The storyline is gripping and unravels slowly but steadily until it reaches its incredible crescendo proving blood is thicker than water
