Essentials of Inorganic Chemistry: For Students of Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Sciences and Medicinal Chemistry Paperback – 6 Feb 2015
By Katja A. Strohfeldt ( University of Reading)

The book.
-------------
This book is designed to be a primer in medical organic chemistry for students of Pharmacology and Medicine.

Approach.
--------------
The book is laid out in typical text book format. There are plenty of tables and chemical diagrams to support the text. The writing style is formal but logical and easy to follow.

The book is sectioned to cover the major chemical groups and their uses. Each group is introduced and referenced from the periodic table. Many of the biochemical pathways are explained and how the drugs interact is presented in a very easy way.

Each chapter is followed by a series of questions and problems along with further reading to test the knowledge of the reader.

Overall.
----------
A good first year primer on the use of inorganic substances in medicine. It would make a good introductory text for these students.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inexpensive but great fun and supsrisingly good !!, 18 April 2015
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Apexel 3 in 1 Clip-on 180 Degree Full Screen Fisheye +0.67x Wide Angle + 10x Macro Lens for iPhone 6/ 6Plus, iPhone 5/5S/5C/4 Samsung HTC Sony LG (No Dark Circle by the Fisheye Lens)

Box contents.
------------------
The lens set is supplied in a nice zip case containing the lenses, attachment clip and a cleaning cloth. Each lens has a lens cap. The case is nice and has room to store memory cards as well. There are two lenses in the box and one is a two piece lens. You use the whole lens for fiosheye and remove the top lens to get a wide angle view with less distortion.

Setting up.
--------------
I tried the lenses on a variety of phones using the clip and it seems very versatile and attached to them with ease. The iPhone 4, Nokia 606 and an IPhone 5 all positioned the supplementary lenses correctly. I tried it on an iPad mini and it worked as well.
I think they will fit most modern phones. The clip seems robust enough with careful use.

In use.
---------
I tried the macro lens which gets you closer first. On the Nokia it allowed me to take in focus shot from about 6 inches from the subject.
The wide effect lens gives the camera and extra 20 degrees of view with that familiar fish eye type distortion.

Picture quality.
--------------------
The macro (close up) lens works very well and the shots were sharp with good colour and saturation. The fish eye effect lens gave a nice effect but the shot were slightly out of focus (you needed to look hard to see this) but the over perspective was quite pleasing. This may be down to me a more practice might help. However, it works well and you can get some pleasing shots.

Overall.
-----------
I was not expecting much from this set but how wrong I was. The macro lens is great and allows you to get about one inch from the subject and the results are more than acceptable. The wide fish eye effect lens allows you to get some great distortion effect and landscapes. I took a picture of one of our horses about a foot from his head and it produced a comical image of a horse with a huge head and tiny legs. I'll try to upload these later and you will be able to see the fun you can have for very little outlay.
Overall a phone accessory that is cheap, well made and fun to use and gives good results. An excellent fun buy.

I will post photos soon, there is a problem sending them up with my reviews and Amazon is sorting the problem.

3.0 out of 5 stars A good overview of Microsoft computing but will go out of date soon and is very expensive., 16 April 2015

Computing Fundamentals: Introduction to Computers by Faithe Wempen.

I am a University lecturer in the bio sciences and also have an IT degree and sometimes teach computing to Bio. Scientists at all levels.

This is a large format text book on how computers work and Microsoft software.

Contents.
-------------
The book covers how the physical computer work, the motherboard components and peripherals and then moves into the loading and use of the main Microsoft packages. The operating system information is based around Windows 8.1 which at the time of writing (April 2015) is shortly to be replaced with the new Windows 10. The contents are broken roughly into these sections:

The hardware and how it all work together,

The Operating system,

Microsoft Office,

The internet and associated Microsoft software (Internet Explorer and Outlook),

Working on the Web.

Writing style.
-----------------
It is a text book but the writing is logical and everything is well explained and documented. The author is a Microsoft master instructor and knows Microsoft software inside out.

Overall.
----------
A good basic text on Windows. However, there is not much on Web design and also the book will go out of date very quickly and it is very expensive for what it is. There is also not enough information on system security and how to deal with risks. The book is also a Microsoft view of the World of IT which blinkers it somewhat. I feel it is doing far too much in some sections and not enough in others. On balance it could be a useful book for a student at school but the Dummies books are more hands on and much cheaper. Overall a brave attempt to do everything in one book but I feel that is part of the problem. Also the asking price is far too high.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good advice and examples covering common presentation mistakes., 13 April 2015

Presenting Data: How to communicate your message effectively Hardcover – 26 Sep 2014
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I work as a lecturer and see hundreds of presentations each year. Many are flawed due to simple mistakes in numeracy. This book aims to help students and presenter rectify the common issues found. These include, rounding, formatting, titles, axis mistakes, using the wrong types of graphs and general presentation problems.
The author, Ed Swires-Hennessy is a retired statistician.

Who is the book for?
---------------------------
This book aims to clean up our presentation styles and content by documenting the most common errors. The examples used are drawn from many disciplines. Science, nursing, business and any students needing to present figures will be able to get something from this book.

Writing style.
-----------------
The author leads by example and there are lots of examples of good and bad practice. The text is easy to read and follow along with lots of advice given. Lots of colour examples are given.

Overall.
----------
There is nothing new here but it’s all in one place and nicely presented with good examples and descriptions. The book is well written and all the common errors are dealt with. I will certainly be putting it on my students book list.

Pearl Oyster Mushroom Kitchen Garden Grow Your Own Kit
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is a kit to enable you to grow your own Pearl Oyster mushroom. All you have to do is add water.

Set up.
----------
This is easy, just open the box and pour in some water and wait!

Now after a week we have a small cluster of mushrooms forming. They are growing very fast as they are in a warm room. It’s been fascinating to check on them each day to see how things are progressing. As for the amount of harvest only time will tell but it looks promising so far.

Overall.
----------
This has triggered much debate in our house about how they grow etc. The kids have checked them at every opportunity. This is an expensive way to get mushrooms but it does provide a huge fascination factor. Luckily my kit was fine as I see other reviewers have had some problems with the mushrooms already growing etc.
Overall an expensive way to buy mushroom but a fascinating educational tool.

Towards the Flame: Empire, War and the End of Tsarist Russia

This book documents an often overlooked period in Russian history. A lot happened here and this book sets out to explain it.

Writing style.
-----------------
This book is well written and gives plenty of researched facts and opinions. This was a very turbulent time for Russia and there are many interpretation but the author does well to develop the truth from the facts.
The book is not hard to read and is well structured and presented. I did learn a lot about this time from this book and many preconceptions I had were challenged intelligently with evidence to back it all up.

Overall.
----------
A welcome addition to books covering this part of Russian history.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
The New Rules of Sales and Service: How to Use Agile Selling, Real-Time Customer Engagement, Big Data, Content, and Storytelling to Grow Your Business

The book.
-------------
I was expecting (like several other reviewers) an Americanised view of sales and using modern techniques. However, I am delighted to report the book is well written, relevant and all of the examples are transferable to the Uk selling environment.

Content.
-----------
In this book David Meerman Scott looks at how we present our companies to customers using modern data and sales methods. He compares and contrasts the old with the new in a very successful way and presents new solutions for success in the global market place.

Does it work ?
-------------------
For me it did as it has made me think about how we use our communications systems to market with. The book has made me look in more detail at social media and the benefits this may bring using it as a sales and marketing platform.
The book is not full of corporate jargon and is very easy to read and engage with.

Overall.
----------
A good starting point to help any company develop a better sales strategy in the global marketplace. Plenty of advice about researching, preparing and developing a sales edge using modern methods. Well worth a look if you are a management student or practising in a sales and service role.

Lexar Professional 16 GB JumpDrive M20 Mobile USB 3.0 and Micro USB Flash Drive Memory Stick

Package.
-------------
This comes blister packed and you will need scissors to open it !

Overall quality.
--------------------
I agree with other reviewers that is does feel very flimsy. The switch to go between a USB and micro USB socket is poor and does not slide very easily. I think it would be easy to break unless great care is taken.

Compatibility.
------------------
This is compatible with USB 3.0 and backwardly compatible with older USB standards but writing and reading will be much slower here.
As for phones it fits all of my Android devices, Moto G phone, Samsung tablet and Samsung S5 phone.

Operation.
--------------
The unit was recognised by my phones but not by my tablet. I was able to save and read files between the phones with ease. As for the tablet I have tried everything but it is not fully recognising it, I can write out but not read in. There are no instructions with the flash drive so I am stuck here. I have fired off an email to Lexar for some help.
I connected it to my daughters cheap Chinese android clone tablet and it worked fine both saving and reading files so I think there is something deep in the Samsung menus that I need to turn on.
Apart from the glitch with the tablet it works fine and allows the back up of files on the move.

Overall.
----------
It works well when you can get it to connect but I still have the tablet problem to solve. It is flimsy and I think easy to break. If used carefully and you can get it to work I think this will be a useful device. If you can’t get it to work it will just bring frustration and become an expensive USB 3.0 flash key.
