It was around this time that the NME described Beefheart and his band as the best 'on this or any other planet' make no mistake this music is not played by improvisation. It is designed this way by the captain himself. It's pure Beefheart. The utterly brilliant musicians that make up this band were in no doubt whatsoever what the captain wanted. the result is the finest rock album ever ever ever

5.0 out of 5 stars Light Read? I don't think so., 5 Nov. 2011

This review is from: The Sisters Brothers (Paperback)
Some snots weren't happy with this novel being included in the shortlist for the Man Booker. 'Light read' and 'beach book' they exclaimed. Not a bit of it. This novel is brilliantly written, intelligent, subtle and witty. There's never a dull moment as the notorious Sisters brothers go in search for a gold prospector called Herman Warm. Warm has upset the 'Commodore' and he wants revenge. What the Commodore wants, the Sisters brothers will deliver but they have to overcome a series of harrowing adventures to get to their quarry. What really makes it all work so well, is you never know what the brothers are going to do as they are confronted with a series of moral dilemmas. One thing is for sure, you don't want to pick fight with them.

2.0 out of 5 stars Half terrific, half turkey, 29 Oct. 2011
I was dying to see this movie. The reviews were ecstatic and the storyline sounded inspired. Sure 'nuff it starts brilliantly with just the right mixture of horror and laughs all in the worst possible taste, about halfway through however, the movie itself dies a horrible death just at the very point it should have took off. It slows drastically just when you don't want it to - just when your expectancy is in overdrive. Why let us off the hook?

5.0 out of 5 stars Impish King on great form, 29 Aug. 2011

This review is from: Full Dark, No Stars (Hardcover)
I haven't read Stephen King for about twenty years. I loved his early stuff and have to say that 'The Shining' is still the only novel I've read that made me jump. I Tried to read 'Bag of Bones' recently and gave up after about 50 pages. My interest in King was re-ignited by the universal praise for Full Dark, No Stars by the critics. It's disturbing, tasteless, horrifying and hilarious. So what's new? you may ask. Nothing really and aren't we all grateful for that. This is King at his most playful. Sometimes I think (No,I know) that his puke inducing prose is his way of having fun with the reader. The humour in King's writing has always been there, non more than in 'Fair Extension' one of the four wonderful tales which make up this compilation. It could be thoroughly depressing, but is in fact one of the funniest stories I've ever read. I know the critics are warming to Stephen King, even comparing him to Dickens and I'm not surprised. King is cool again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beefo goes mainstream, well almost., 3 Jan. 2011
This album is essential if only for one track, This is the Day. Not a particularly brilliant song but incorporating the best guitar solo ever played on this, or any other planet. Zoot Horn Rollo reaches notes that other guitarists can only dream of. You can hear the Captain's influence (he could only give Zoot a rough idea about what he wanted) but what emerges is a thing of unfeasible beauty that's unmistakedly Beefheart. The rest of the album is worth a listen although it's not the sort of stuff normally associated with the Captain. Thankfully the original Magic Band supply the backing so there's some evidence of their rather unique style, admirably supported by Zoot Horn's incredible guitar playing.

1.0 out of 5 stars Lee's not hungry anymore, 6 Dec. 2010
How on earth did Lee Mack allow this dreadful DVD into the public domain. The first 10 minutes are excruciating with Mack displaying alarming signs of galloping stagefright. No wonder he was self conscious having to struggle with material seemingly scraped from the bottom of a barrel. After this disasterous opening he picks up a bit, only to die a horrible death soon after. From this point it's downhill all the way with the audience forcing themselves to laugh at some of the saddest, crudely unfunny, desperate ranting I have ever heard. On this evidence it's time for Lee Mack to forget stand-up and stroll on.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's not really Jazz, but I like it, 19 Sept. 2010

This review is from: P.S. (Audio CD)
Andy Sheppard gets a lot of stick from deep thinking jazz freaks for being a bit bland and unchallenging. That is fair enough if you compare him to say Miles Davis or Michael Breaker. Sometimes I don't want to be 'challenged' though. Some of the greatest music ever written ISN'T challenging. Challenging jazz can mean nerve wracking free blowing which only serves to rub you up the wrong way and get you angry. This album is a welcome diversion from being challenged. It's colourul and atmospheric with the sax and guitar in perfect harmony. I could loop this album forever and never tire of it.

Your search is over. If you really wanna know how it is, then there is nowhere else to go. After Doug Stanhope there is nothing. He makes Frankie Boyle look like Ken Dodd. Do yourself a big favour, go buy this DVD and rid yourself of all the garbage you have been fed since the day you were born.

1.0 out of 5 stars Unremittingly awful, 13 Mar. 2010

I may be being a bit unfair in lambasting this novel as I seem to have acquired the venusian version. I have read hundreds of books but I have never, ever, read anything as ugly, incoherent and unreadable as this.

The Angel's Game
The Angel's Game
by Carlos Ruiz Zafon
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is why we love books, 27 Feb. 2010
This review is from: The Angel's Game (Paperback)
The Angel's game is quite brilliant. It promotes so many different reactions from all who read it. That's the magic of it. Anyone who thought Zafon would sell his soul to the filthy Euro and create a contractual watered down version of The Shadow of the wind will be pleasantly surprised. He's really gone for it with this one. It's dark and foreboding. It's full of atmosphere, intrigue and mystery. It really is a brain mangler that will keep you occupied long after turning the final jaw dropping page.
