5.0 out of 5 stars Cannon Fodder so slow that submarines could keep up with them even when they were submerged?, 20 Nov. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This story is familiar territory ....history repeats itself time again....the same old bastards are in charge and 2016 it just might as well be 1936 .... We lost 6000 Merchant Ships out of the 11,000 Merchant Ships that started the Second World War the total of war dead who were lost in these ships will never be known of of even acknowledged by the London based establishment what a callous cancerous collage of professinal lowlifes they are!

In my opinion these ?shipowners? were a worse set of enemies to the The English working man than the Germans were!. This book shows us what happens when a vital commercial discipline is subjected to a policy of continuous exploitation along with parsimonious investment. this specious and selfish policy of commercial suicide was conducted by it's owners should we wonder at the corrupt and deeply venal system that presided over this totally reprehensible ....policy .

When the second World War came about far too many of ?our? british merchant ships were only fit for the scrapyard being neglected old - and barely seaworthy ...who were so slow they were cannon fodder for submarines they could even keep up with them when they were submerged. The Royal Navy had ignored the lessons of the First World War and duly rendered itself not fit for purpose. It compounded it's neglect by signing suicidal Washington treaties The Royal Navy concentrated upon covering up it's own deficiencies to such a degree that the protection it could give to the Merchant Fleet was a complete fallacy for example for the first three years of the war it was so useless at defending itself it could barely defend itself! without incurring extremely heavy losses. It had Admirals who had ignored airpower to the point when aircraft were busy sinking and crippling all kinds of ships ...wholesale these dinosaurs still imagined they had nothing to fear from aircraft??

To further compound this situation the merchant sailors were not allowed to change their jobs once The Second World War war had started and regardless of wether they had families or not they were condemned to continue working as Merchant Seamen. These men were treat like slaves by almost all the shipowners.they had no real friends to support them anywhere in London's civil service or it's government. In fact they were subjected to a totalitarian regime by London's establishment who looked on them as being almost subhuman and disposable they even stopped the seamens pay the moment the ships sunk.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonder at this man's survival, 19 Nov. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Wings Of Chance (Kindle Edition)
Yes war is a bloody business ..and this book does cut the mustered down like wheat stalks and I do not wonder at his initial hesitation in writing this book. We slowly perceive how it really was and think on the awful position these men were in and the continued degree of loyalty and sacrifice they gave to to us. Hot work staying alive when youre a wartime pilot in the RAF read this and wonder at this mans survival

5.0 out of 5 stars A viciously fought battle conducted with Torpedoes Cannon and machine guns firing at point blank range over open sights........, 19 Nov. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Some story this well researched and collated book book covering many aspects of this battle yes ....this story is a very human story of a really nasty viciously fought battle of survival conducted in poor visibility at point blank range over open sights in the Norwegian Fiords around the highly strategic Iron Ore sea port of Narvik in the desperate year of 1940.

It was a merciless exchange in which the the victors and the victims changed places and inevitably muliplied as events unravelled literally page by page the story unfolds like a slow motion tragedy The Britishs and German naval seamen and the sailors of the merchant ships and the German soldiers involved whose ships were literally sunk in seconds as soon as they were seen the men who escaped from these ships were shipwrecked without warning to experience the limits of survival by their abrupt exposure to the freezing waters in the Narvik Fiord.

Considering the limited scale of the armed forces involved in this conflict the casualties were enormous Mixed into this clash of titans were the Norwegian people living at Narvik and it's surrounding villages the men and women who tried to rescue the sailors and merchant seamen of both sides the author tells their stories and gives us their thoughts of these cataclysmic events in their lives.

I worked with Edward Baggely a man who was a Petty Officer who servied on the Hasty at Narvik since then as he continued his wartime service in the Royal Navy he had been on active service in the Atlantic the Meditterranean and the Pacific and seen events that we today would find to be incredible he was lucky to survive. The first intitial wartime shock he experienced was this terrifying baptism of fire in Narvik Fiord.

The authors father was also at Narvik and now i know why this insignificant battle inside The Artic Circle was so important in it's day. If the German destroyers which had been sunk during the battle of Narvick had survived this experience and then been utilised in the Engluish Channel at the time of Dunkirk the kind of world we would haved lived in would have been a very different place!

These memoirs of fighter pilots invarialby follow a similar format because their lives were forced to be similar and in some instances they were brutally short.
