Behind the Black Door
Behind the Black Door
by Sarah Brown
Edition: Hardcover

1.0 out of 5 stars My diary is more entertaining than this!, 1 Dec. 2011
This review is from: Behind the Black Door (Hardcover)
Why do 'celebrities' think that they can write? My diary is more entertaing than this! (Truthfully.)
Mrs Brown's prose is boring. This memoir is as airbrushed as the photo on on the cover, while her observation of the world is very narrow. Lists of famous names make for very dull reading.

The friend who lent me this told me to hold on to it 'for a year or three.' I wonder why?

4.0 out of 5 stars Who is mad? Who is bad?, 8 Nov. 2010
A slow burning psychological drama superbly acted. Lovely settings, too. We have been deprived of quality TV drama for such a long time, so to have this so soon after Downton Abbey and Single Father is maybe a sign that things are looking up?
I love the way one of the characters turns slowly into the other one.
(Only four stars though because I think it is one for the girls.)

GORSE TRILOGY, THE - The West Pier; Mr Stimpson and Mr Gorse; Unknown Assailant

4.0 out of 5 stars A slow burning but rewarding read, 17 May 2010
This is a tale for people who are not in a hurry, and who have the patience for a story that unfolds at its own pace.

The life story of Ralph Ernest Gorse is not rushed, but all the minute details of his behaviour add up to a very complete portrait of a warped mind, adept at manipulating others.

"Mr Stimpson and Mr Gorse" was the inspiration for the wonderful TV series "The Charmer" with Nigel Havers and although the original is pretty different from the adaptation, both are equally enjoyable.

4.0 out of 5 stars A glimpse into a fascinating mind, 17 May 2010
This review is from: Writing Home (Paperback)
Alan Bennet is a one-off; a deeply, genuinely shy man who somehow acquired a high public profile.

His book is one to dip into with pleasure and to return to again and again for its honesty, acute observation, humanity and humour.

As you read you can hear his distinctive voice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliantly cast, 15 May 2010
The casting in this DVD is excellent. All the actors look like the people they portray.

The adaptation is pretty faithful to the facts.

The secret annexe is cleverly reproduced.

If is impossible at the end watch these people walking downstairs to their fate without a huge lump in the throat

Emma (Wordsworth Classics)

5.0 out of 5 stars My desert island book, 8 Nov. 2009
Please, if you have never read Emma, please do judge this book by any film or TV adaptation you may have seen. The classic mistake of adaptors is to squeeze out a plot where there is none, trying to turn it into another Pride and Prejudice. (I love P & P, but Emma is better.)

This novel is about characters and is a wickedly funny observation of the society, the manners and the daily lives of the early 19th century. It sparkles with humour.

This is a truly great book that does not give up all its secrets at the first (or even the tenth reading.) Nothing happens in Emma, everything happens in Emma.

Read, savour, re-read.

(Who am I to praise the great Jane?. Unworthy. I will just genuflect and go.)

Under The Duvet

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining, 6 Nov. 2009
This review is from: Under The Duvet (Paperback)
I read Under the Duvet in one go on a long train journey.
(Looking back, I now realise fellow pasengers must have wondered what I was giggling about.)
The book is NOT a novel, but a collection of magazine articles written over the years by Ms Keyes who, incredibly, writes in an Irish accent. How does she do that?
The legion of Keyes fans will enjoy finding more about the author and her life.

5.0 out of 5 stars A literary experience, 5 Nov. 2009
This review is from: The Secret History (Paperback)
I am ashamed to confess that when I was given Ms Tartt's book in a present, I thought it was going to be chic lit!
However, when I began to read I quickly saw that I was in the presence of great literature.
This is a book I shall read again and again.

Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The only negative thought I had while watching this was "This may be the last ever" and that is too sad to contemplate.

If you are wondering whether or not to buy this, I advise you to watch a substantial number of previous episodes first so that you become familiar with the characters and get to know the running jokes, otherwise omelettes and fishing trips (for example) will leave you cold.

Beautiful piece of writing, top class acting. Oh please make another!
