Truly terrible - silly story badly told - makes "Life of Brian" look like a documentary!

Entertaining easy read with lots of laughs - also insightful and sad in parts. Not to be taken too seriously however. Enjoy rather than over analysing!

Varieties of Scientific Experience
Varieties of Scientific Experience
by Carl Sagan
Edition: Paperback
Price: £16.00

5.0 out of 5 stars There is intelligent life on Earth!, 13 Oct. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I remember Carl Sagan's inspirational appearances on TV in the late 70's and so was interested to see if his thinking was still relevant today. The answer is a resounding yes with a very clear and logical approach to science and debunking superstition but without pretending to know all the answers, leaving mysteries to explore. There is also hope for the future and our understanding of our place in the cosmos. Still a useful anchor in troubled times.
I wonder what he would have made of our ever increasing overall negative impacts on Earth's life support systems? Even more urgency to continue with the SETI perhaps?

5.0 out of 5 stars Poetic and connecting!, 30 Sept. 2014
This is a wonderful intelligent read for anyone interested in walking and nature. Well written with a sensitive understanding of landscape and it's historic connection. The book also has a spiritual dimension and I enjoyed the links to other books and writing such as "The Snow Leopard", another travel travel book exploring inner and outer landscapes and the pathways between. Also includes a great glossary - which I will come back to for reference.

David and Goliath: Underdogs, Misfits and the Art of Battling Giants
David and Goliath: Underdogs, Misfits and the Art of Battling Giants
by Malcolm Gladwell
Edition: Hardcover

3.0 out of 5 stars Good in parts, 5 Nov. 2013
There is no doubt that Gladwell is an entertaining writer and parts of this book are fun to read. However, as with "Tipping Point" I got half way through and thought this is repeating the same fairly obvious point again and again. I was also put off by his very one sided account of the early days of the Northern Ireland troubles. Some of what he says is true, some statements are sweeping without a shred of evidence, and the whole piece needs to be put into a proper historical context - otherwise it could be misleading, particularly to an American audience.
