The Poisonous Seed: A Frances Doughty Mystery (Frances Doughty Mysteries)
The Poisonous Seed: A Frances Doughty Mystery (Frances Doughty Mysteries)
by Linda Stratmann
Edition: Paperback
Price: £8.99

4.0 out of 5 stars The Poisonous Seed, 16 April 2014

Linda Stratmann's experience as a true crime writer shows in her telling of this complex story, rich in the flavour of the Victorian era. In Frances Doughty she has created a central figure that is restrained, watchful and yet with an underlying humour. I will certainly read the other books in the series.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Frozen Shroud, 13 July 2013

Martin Edwards is one of those writers whose books are guaranteed to provide an enjoyable read. Clearly, this is a view held by his many fans who have relished the previous Lake District novels and eagerly awaited this, the sixth in the series. The Frozen Shroud does not disappoint and hopefully Martin Edwards has already begun to lay down the plot of the next one.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Moat Farm Mystery, 24 Sept. 2012

Undoubtedly, 'The Moat Farm Mystery' is the definitive study of the case. M.W.Oldridge writes with elegance and integrity and the character of the complex scoundrel, Samuel Herbert Dougal, is vividly portrayed; it takes great skill to engage the reader in the life of such an unpleasantly cruel and incorrigible protagonist. Though the book is a work of impressive scholarship, it also reads as a thriller, gripping the reader's attention from beginning to end. This book must surely join the ranks of the very best true crime studies featuring one of the most fascinating murder cases of the late Victorian and Edwardian period in our criminal history.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Arsenic Labyrinth, 27 Aug. 2012
The reviews already printed here have given an indication of the theme of 'The Arsenic Labyrinth' but I should like to echo some of the comments about this book and the others in the Lake District series. All the novels are enjoyable to read, well-paced and full of insights into human behaviour, tinged with a wry humour; they also have terrific beginnings and gruesome endings, so important in crime novels and, with the back-drop of the Lakes, they would probably adapt very well to the small screen.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Serpent Pool, 20 Aug. 2012
Although I usually read True Crime books I have enjoyed reading all five crime novels in Martin Edwards's Lake District series. The novels have interesting story lines involving several key characters that appear in each book and the lead up to the denouement is cleverly constructed to remain ambiguous yet still hold the reader's interest. Martin Edwards writes with humour and insight into human behaviour under stress and the beginnings and endings are excellent. I particularly enjoyed 'The Serpent Pool' - the final scene is quite something and I look forward to reading the sixth book in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Whitechapel and District, 28 May 2012

I would agree with the previous reviews of this book. It is extremely well-written, meticulously researched and offers so much more than the usual re-telling of the Whitechapel murders. An excellent and informative read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Foul Deeds and Suspicious Deaths Around Brighton, 28 May 2012
I can thoroughly recommend this book. The writing is clear and concise and, above all, accurate. The author is especially good at recreating the atmosphere of nineteenth century Brighton, without lapsing into melodrama - excellent.
