2.0 out of 5 stars hard to match landscape and characters., 13 Feb. 2017

I have just tried watching this drama, but was bored and confused after 15 minutes.None of the characters seemed very real ....so many appeared so fast, just so many names. one problem was the contrived unnatural dialogue, often glib and sounding like that of some cheap TV chat show host. The landscape looks beautiful, but that bunch of characters somehow did not seem to blend with it.There is some problem with understanding what the actors are saying, which was not , I think, because of the Scottish accent. The sound and picture quality were none too good. Maybe I am judging too soon, but as with a book, where the first page draws you in or or leaves you yawning....so it works with filmed drama.

Excellent fast service from the seller. Helen Mirren makes the film really memorable. The subject of the film, Nazi art thefts from Jews in Vienna is highly interesting and very thought-provoking; where does art belong..open to public view in the country of origin, or back with the rightful owner and so in another country? It is an engrossing and moving film, but there are very big technical problems; the subtitles are atrocious. The print is tiny and almost illegible and the subtitles flash past very fast. Some American dialogue is garbled and nearly incomprehensible.Do filmmakers ever take note of frequent viewers' comments of this nature?!

4.0 out of 5 stars I half like it., 12 July 2015

I am not sure what Polanski intended with this film.Yes it is perfectly engaging and the cinematography is beautiful. And yet somehow there is no real emotion in it, no pathos. Everything in the visual scene screams France...buidings, rural scene, interiors and certainly not Wessex, which is disconcerting. There is something odd about a Hardy story in a French atmosphere, since the physical environment forms a real part of the plot in Hardy.Certainly one can enjoy the film for the skill of its cinematic effects and yet the story loses its tragic depths because it is wrenched from its English environment of its time.Just imagine Anna Karenina played out in London! It all depends how you view cinema. Is the purpose to tell a meaningful story or to dazzle with wonderful cinematic art.

3.0 out of 5 stars initial impression, 2 July 2015

I have just received this book and taken a first look.As a linguist, I would make the following comments;1. The script is clearly mostly different and hard for us.Yet I had to use a magnifying glass to examine the letters! Why not print them bigger? They should be printed on lines to show the alignment..at least initially. 2. There should be indications of how to write the unfamiliar letters as many people will want to write the words. The difficulties of the script are glossed over. 3. I have read that Georgian, one of the Caucasian languages is not related at all to the Indo-European languages. At first glance it seems to have some of the usual features of Indo-European languages.I am intrigued.Overall I feel keen to have a go.4. The beginning of the DVD with consonant pronunciation seems to go at a ridiculous pace for absolute beginners!

1.0 out of 5 stars unwatchable rubbish, 1 Mar. 2015
This is the most senseless rubbish I have ever seen. In my view it is American to the core; worthless nonsense script,Cynically it tries to add glamour to its rubbish with a supposedly exotic location and historical allusion.Add to that the usual punch ups and American contemporary gutter abusive language, supposedly happening in 1930's eastern Europe! Have these writers no idea???It is unbelievable trash and I am annoyed that I wasted £5 as it will land in the bin. Ralph Fiennes delivers a very good performance as ever, but he deserves better quality scripts.

The plot is highly interesting and the acting superb. A very practical point; it is very difficult to negotiate progression through the episodes, which could have been made much simpler as it was in the past. The designer also seems to assume that everyone has telescopic vision to read the tiny ,scrappy text titles. Some accompanying notes or a documentary about the author, the activities of "the circus" at the time and the cold war background would have been welcome.

The film starts with some explanatory texts printed in such minute script they are unreadable...so you are off to an unpromising start.Actors" appear, shamble about like demented morons and speak some incomprehensible language with not a single consonant or clear vowel sound.Chimpanzees could speak and act better. Many American films are a disgrace. It would be helpful if all films were clearly marked; British or American speech, and we would make our own choice.Such appalling low grade
material should never be put on the market...a con. I HAVE rated this film. Zero is what I give it.

The film is of its time...acting not very good, showing Hollywood influence. One has the impression that the resistance workers do very little substantial work, as the film focuses on sentimental concerns, and what now seems like patriotism which is partly the result of brainwashing. The producers show sloppiness and ignorance as some of the German is incorrect. Violet szabo's story should merit a new filming with more appropriate casting and better focus.

1.0 out of 5 stars appalled, 3 May 2013

The book contains ideas about the privatisation of medicine and the consequences. The film is unacceptable. The diction is so sloppy, the actors often speaking as though with their last dying breath, and with backs to the viewer...their speech is a lot of the time incomprehensible..it is hard to credit that it is English. The director seems to prefer showing some sexuel sequences, having some loud music and filming some shabby dance routines to actually telling the story with any clarity.A five year old could have done better. Why approach a story in this adolescent and crazy fashion?Viewing the film one had the impression that the technical equipment was failing as the volume kept fading. There were no reviews, so I had to purchase on trust.
