4.0 out of 5 stars A must read on international politics, 23 Dec. 2015
This is a diplomatic history of the end of the Cold War. It is not an analysis of geostrategic or economic realities that made the end of the Cold war possible. It is simply a story, based on a careful in-depth study of the newly available documents and literature, of how it happened. The story focuses on personalities, and (reflecting, no doubt, the specialty of the author), on the Soviet side more than on the American side. Both focuses are welcome. The focus on personalities makes the story alive and immensely readable. The focus on the Russian side not only corrects the prevailing focus of the American literature, but offers unusual insights, unavailable elsewhere. The book is meticulously researched. While many books on Russia suffer from factual mistakes so numerous as to make the book unreadable (books by Marshal Goldman, Edward Lucas and Anne Applebaum come to mind), this one has the reliability of a forensic evidence. The specificity of the story, however, does not make the book conceptually uninteresting. For me, the main value of the book is the light it sheds on the current international politics. One cannot hope to understand the policies of the current Russian government without understanding that it is, in a good measure, a reaction to the style of diplomacy practiced by Gorbachev. His foreign policy, although not without serious merits (as Service makes abundantly clear), was dysfunctional, determined by structural weaknesses and was pursued in a desultory manner. Putin's diplomacy, no doubt, is consciously shaped by a constantly renewed pledge of "Niemehr". Never again what? The manner of diplomacy practiced by Gorbachev and Shevardnadze as described by Service. There are other conclusions to be drawn. One of them is a highly limited role that the countries other than the two protagonists played in the drama. Why then only four stars here? Because of the weak ending section. The book is much more powerful than the feeble express conclusions that the author has chosen to draw. Do not rely on the epilogue, draw your own lessons.

4.0 out of 5 stars fine - sturdily made, 12 Dec. 2015

More suitable for carpeted floors than for hard surfaces. Do not buy it for kitchen tiles. Otherwise, fine - sturdily made, does the job.

5.0 out of 5 stars I would recommend this one over others, 12 Dec. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
There are several tenderizers on Amazon. This is not the cheapest. However, if you are serious about you meats, I would recommend this one over others. The reasons: 1. Good finish. The flat end is well finished - and one buys a tenderizer for its smooth end, after all. 2. Excellent grip. Much preferable to all-metal models. 3. Optimal weight and balance. Not too light and not too heavy - just what one needs to do meat efficiently, without tiring. 4. Last but not least, pleasing to the eye - well finished all around. What's not to like?

2.0 out of 5 stars The picture is better than the watch, 12 Dec. 2015
Had to return. The picture is better than the watch. The watch was bulky and aesthetically not pleasing at all. Cheap look and feel.

Citizen Eco-Drive Men's Watch with Blue Dial Chronograph Display and Two Tone Stainless Steel Plated Bracelet BL5184-56L

5.0 out of 5 stars awfully nice watch, 29 Nov. 2015
I have about twenty watches, some of them expensive. My wife bought me this one, I refuse to take it off now, I do not quite understand why. Somehow, I just love it. It is slightly smaller than I had thought, but that is OK with me. It is very easy to read, and has a wonderful feel. The workmanship is what you expect from an established Japanese brand (no flaws). One piece of advice - do not try to set it following the leaflet that comes with the box. It is simply wrong. And the set-up is really tricky and NOT intuitive. However, I have set it up in less than ten minutes following a very good video on the Citizen web site. You go there, put in the case number from the back of he watch, and the video with your model comes up. The video stops after each step to allow you to repeat the instructions. It is very well done and fun to follow.

Why Leaders Lie: The Truth about Lying in International Politics
Why Leaders Lie: The Truth about Lying in International Politics
by R Wendell Harrison Distinguished Service Professor of Political Science Co-Director of the Program on International Security Policy John J Mearsheimer
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars worth reading if you are interested in international politics, 26 Sept. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A slim volume by the preeminent modern exponent of realist school. Mearsheimer is keen on categorization, but, once you go through it, his approach certainly clears a lot of deadwood from the subject. It is well written, and reads easily. The value for a general reader is realization that a that the strategic mendacity of great powers is a tool of politics, not necessarily a manifestation of innate moral depravity. You do not have to be taken in, though. I Mearsheimer writes neither out of academic vanity, nor to make an ideological point. He actually cares to arm the general reader with a tool to penetrate the political white noise and to enable him to understand international politics as professionals do. If you absorb the book, your perception of political news will never be the same.

War and Remembrance (Wwii) by Wouk, Herman (2013) Paperback
War and Remembrance (Wwii) by Wouk, Herman (2013) Paperback

3.0 out of 5 stars Good sequel for "The Winds of War", 26 Sept. 2015
Full disclosure: I have audible version. It is a sequel to Wings of War. that is, a real sequel, that does not make sense if you did not read the first part before. As the Wind of War, it is one of the great American middlebrow novels of the sixties and seventies, the genre that is, lamentable, dead. Herman Wouk and his oeuvre is right there, with the likes of Leon Uris, Arthur Hailey, Irwin Shaw, James Clavell, Irving Stone and James Michener.
So the first reason to buy the book is nostalgia for the genre. It is a towering door stopper of a novel, with a soap opera plot, and a diligent historical research. You may safely expect a soothingly pedestrian language, and comfortingly two-dimensional characters. Part of the allure.
In some ways, it is superior to the first installment. Thus, description of the Midway battle is very good, in the sense that it gives you a a factual outline of and an emotional purchase into the subject that entices further reading.
The book was obviously intended to be an American "War and Peace" for WWII. The attempt failed (Wouk is no Tolstoy), but the obvious parallels are quite entertaining. Warren at Midway is so obviously modeled on Prince Andrei at Borodino. You may amuse yourself with the game of detecting further parallels.
In short, if you have been through the first part, consider persevering. If not, think carefully before embarking on the whole enterprise.
