The Somme: The Untold Story in Never Before Seen Panorama
by Peter Barton
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £36.00

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a beautiful book, full of photos, 14 July 2016

This is a beautiful book, full of photos, maps, personal histories and essential detail for anyone with an interest in the story of the Battle of the Somme. I bought this as a present for a friend, having obtained a copy for myself two years ago. The price is already rising well above that paid and the book is surely destined to become a military classic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential reading for aspiring painters, 12 April 2016

Trevor Chamberlain is one of the best British oil and watercolour colour painters. His skill, especially with light, is nothing short of amazing. I can thoroughly recommend this book, indeed all his books, which have been of great assistance to me over the last fifteen years or so.

I'm sure I could have got this info from the Internet. It just lists everything that can be done with Xbox one, but doesn't tell you how, which is what I wanted. Don't waste your cash.

I never would have expected to see science so brazenly turned on its head head to mask some fundamental but uncomfortable truths about climate change but here it all is for those willing to see it. This is a detailed and meticulous exposé of the web of lies and half truths of the scientific establishment that defies all credibility, were the email records not there to prove it. This, together with the disgraceful way in which the ensuing enquiries were conducted in order to ensure the best possible spin and the whitewashing of almost all concerned makes troubling reading. How Jones and Mann et al can maintain their positions in the scientific community in the light of the record defies belief but Andrew Montford shows how it happened and how it will continue. A truly excellent book, not to be missed.

I'm not familiar with Apple, having only used Windows before, so it's taking a while to get to understand things. First impressions are that it's a very well designed computer and well worth every penny.

5.0 out of 5 stars An affable cold blooded killer who got away., 27 Feb. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
From the outset this book seizes the reader's attention and it doesn't let go until the very end. I thought at first that as the story of Philby's ultimate defection is so well known that this would detract from the story, but no, far from it; Macintyre's writing is excellent, exploring in meticulous detail the background to Philby's life and his eventual and almost inevitable entry in the British intelligence services with its appalling consequences. It traces the alarmingly simplistic and ridiculous method of recruitment that existed in those times, the long used 'Wink wink, he's one of ours, old boy' approach, which was ripe for exploitation.

Philby's record as a cold blooded and ruthless killer is worse than that of any serial killer of modern times. He succeeded because he was an affable and credible individual who was always good company, especially when alcohol was freely available. Such have been the qualities of every good conman since time immemorial, but this one took lives, not money, and many of those who died did so at the hands of the NKVD and the KGB in the most horrific circumstances. The almost laughable comedy of errors on the part of those in authority who counted themselves his friends and even those who did not, continued until the the last day or so before his ultimate extraction by the Russians, despite serious concerns having been raised by the CIA and FBI. His removal was, in fact, completed with the tacit compliance of the UK government who felt this would be a preferable outcome to placing him on trial with the inevitable scrambled egg trickling down the face of the Establishment that would ensue. There is some grim but meagre satisfaction in knowing that, regretting nothing, Philby ended his days as a lonely drunk in Moscow.

This is a superb read, and is a perfect example of how an exceptionally well narrated history can outdo any work of fiction. Certainly the best non-fiction book I read in 2014.

Superb performances by Dennis Franz and Jimmy Smits, as ever. But also the rest of the NYPD team too, and the casting team should also be congratulated on their selections kills. Definitely not to be missed.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad but..., 28 Jun. 2014
This review is from: The Tunnel [DVD] [2013] (DVD)
I bought this on the recommendations I saw here. I've lived near Folkestone and worked in the Coquelles area of France and know the areas where the story takes place quite well. It doesn't give a very favourable impression of Folkestone with prostitution on the streets that I've never been aware of, though I don't doubt the drug scene exists.

The story was quite well paced and intriguing although some parts were so predictable they were almost a cliché. The activities of a certain young man on the internet was a good example. The worst bit for me,almost producing a groan, was the over used (in almost every second rate thriller) scene of someone sloshing petrol everywhere and then waving a lighter around threatening to burn all those present. As this is as physically impossible as portraying characters walking on walls I have a suggestion as to how this ridiculous scene can be stopped; all writers who decide to include such a story should be required by the producer to demonstrate exactly how this can be achieved while using real petrol.

Clemence Posie was a scene stealer and I'd love to see more of her. Stephen Dillane came across as a tired and rather moth eaten character who I certainly didn't relate to, neither did I feel much sympathy for him. His wife was in the same mode. My greatest surprise was to see the delightful Caroline Proust (of Spiral - definitely not to be missed and well worth 5 stars!) appearing in a bit part that simply did not suit her, nor her qualities as an excellent actress.

Parts of the story were, it's true, gripping. I'm glad I saw it but I can't say it's in the top thirty of thrillers I've seen in recent years, although other clearly would seem to disagree.

He loves his railway set and in particular the level crossing. The level crossing works well and is sufficiently robust to cope with the demands of an energetic two year old.
