Football eh? Bloody football...., 15 Sept. 2009
I absolutely flew through the book, a really easy read in the most positive sense. Charting the season match-by-match (sample chapter headings: 'Wigan Away', 'Liverpool Home') gives it a good pace and means you get a satisfyingly condensed version of a whole season of hope, gloom, dread, train delays, pints, atrocious diet, excuses to the missus, and triumph (well, a mid-table finish...). There are enough asides to give a taste of the author's life beyond football, without ever threatening to distract from the main focus, which is of course all about one of football's traditional spinsters gleefully gatecrashing the Premiership wedding party. Football widows will probably still be none the wiser, but fans suffering the same affliction will be relieved that they can point to someone who has probably got a worse dose of its-not-a-matter-of-life-and-death-its-more-important-than-that-itis than they have...
