1.0 out of 5 stars For those whose sexual phantasies include extreme violence., 5 Feb. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I find this book to be a form of violence pornography. I accept that post-apocalypse will likely result in violent confrontation between the 'baddies' and the good guy, but this novel is for people who get their rocks off relishing detailed descriptions of the violence inflicted by as many different forms of weaponry as possible. It seems likely that the next in the series will find other, different ways to describe details of death and destruction. Being able to quote extended passages from the bible does not give you carte blanche to revel in the death throes of the 'baddies' Mr. Abrahams. I wish that you had not bothered to write this book; the thought of others to follow is just sickening.

Whirlpool Max Microwave with Steam Function - Black
Whirlpool Max Microwave with Steam Function - Black

5.0 out of 5 stars Neatest microwave oven ever, 30 Oct. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A superb little microwave (little in footprint, but standard size on the interior). I love the steam function which is a form of cooking that I prefer and it is quick and easy in this oven. The shape is so much more sensible than the usual rectangular box, This reminds me of the 'corner cupboards' that used to be in my mother's house - prettily functional. It is fairly easy to understand the settings of the different functions, just remember to open the oven door before trying to set a program!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good idea, needs more work., 9 Jan. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Conceptually an interesting idea for an apocalyptic novel. I enjoyed the fact that it is set in UK (a nice change from US based novels) so it is easy to relate to the issues about emergency services, government, hospitals, schools etc. All the issues were tackled well, but I felt that the author was challenged by the need to develop the story line and resorted to describing individual episodes of death by freezing whenever he was at a bit of a loss. The hero's character had potential for development, but was left superficial. As a storyline in which clearly some people were destined to survive, perhaps the aftermath could have been used to produce a more rounded story. As with many other e novels, I find that proof reading does not seem to feature - given that the author has chosen to use a time line to develop the story, it seemed to me that one of the sub-plots was mistimed.

5.0 out of 5 stars A well crafted story, 7 Nov. 2013

It is now some months since I read this book and the story resonates with me still. How difficult is parenting, it never seems to go right and sometimes it goes dreadfully wrong.

Fatal Rivalry, Flodden 1513: Henry VIII, James IV and the battle for Renaissance Britain
Fatal Rivalry, Flodden 1513: Henry VIII, James IV and the battle for Renaissance Britain

5.0 out of 5 stars More than another insight into the (somewhat unpleasant) character of Henry VII; a fascinating read., 7 Nov. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I would usually dislike a "war story", but the build up to the battle of Flodden is so well crafted by this author, that by the time the battle description arrived I was on the edge of my seat. This is not a story of blood and gore however, the emphasis is on tactical issues, the methodology of war at this time and the styles of leadership of the protagonists. A book for those interested in the events that lead to the Union of Scotland with England and who may feel that the Mary Queen of Scots story has had its fair share of telling. The relationships between James IV and the two Henrys (VII and VIII) is very interesting. A beautifully researched piece of work.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book shines some light into the "dark ages", 7 Nov. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
What a fascinating and well researched piece of work. Although the subject material seems esoteric, the writer's style makes this an easy read. It is a book that I will go back to and read again in order to fully appreciate the depth of the material. A book for any reader who prefers their historical reading to be researched rather than pure phantasy whilst at the same time, telling an interesting story about the lives of our ancestors.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mary Queen of Scots and the murder of Lord Darnley Alison Weir, 2 Nov. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Alison Weir's in depth research is evident in the reading of this book. It is not a book for you if you are looking for the romantic tale of the delightful young woman whom history has abused. Mary comes accross as having similar human frailties to ordinary women of today. She made bad decisions and had to live with them. Alison Weir does a good job of helping the reader to understand and remember the very different mores of a time when monarchs were believed to be divine, but were surrounded by sycophants. Despite her excellent research, there is, of course, no easy answer to Mary's level of involvement in Darnley's murder; you can decide for yourself what you believe to be the balance of probabilities.

5.0 out of 5 stars An adventure, 10 July 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is an excellent book, and reading the Kindle edition is by far the best way to read it. Shannon has provided so many links throughout the book that it took me ages to get to the end. By the time I had worked my way through I was much better informed about issues concerning design and knitwear business. I know that this is a book that I will return to many times; it is a substantial reference work.

2.0 out of 5 stars superficial, 10 July 2011

This review is from: Knitting Secrets (Kindle Edition)
The comprehensive list of contents would lead one to think that this might be a good reference work. In fact it is barely more than a pamphlet, with little more than a paragraph on each subject. I found the writing style rather odd - it reminded me of work presented by students who are providing a plan of their intentions. There was very little development of individual subject areas. Those who know little about knitting would not find the instructions helpful (there are no pictures or diagrams) and those who are able to knit will find the instructions pointless. It would have been helpful if the author had given some guidance about the intended audience. Proof reading would have improved the document.

2.0 out of 5 stars not suitable for older people, 13 Nov. 2010
When choosing a cleaner for older people try it out on a carpet. This seemed ideal on the solid floor of the shop because it is so easy to move about, but the very strength of the suction makes it impossible for a frailer person when it is on a carpet.
