A low budget syfy movie, but don't let that dissuade you from giving it a viewing. An interesting take on alien invasion - without relying too much on special effects, but focusing on the human dilemma of how to survive (and fight back) against superior forces. If you've seen Extraterrestrial and others in the same vein, and enjoyed them, then I feel confident that you will like this also. Emil Hirsch commends himself quite well with his cheeky chappie persona. In my view, well worth watching.

A very decent, competent Lord Of The Rings on a low budget film; which is worth bearing in mind if you plan to watch it. As such DO NOT EXPECT it to have billions spent on costume, make up, CGI effects, storyline, or anything else associated with Hollywood. What you will find, once you have left the aforementioned behind is, a pretty good film, a film which if not beating other Middle Earth type films, does more than hold it's own. It is a pretty ambitious attempt, that for the main manages to keep standing. My only gripe is that the ending seemed rather abrupt, and could have done with a bit more polish (obviously, money and time may have been factors). That being said, it is a good film. Enjoy it for what it is - Lord Of The Rings lite.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Dark Knight Rises is an excellent film, Christopher Nolan, 8 July 2014

The Dark Knight Rises is an excellent film, Christopher Nolan, as director, is a man who truly understands his craft and, the views of fans of comicdom. In having Hans Zimmer helm the music score to this film, he knew Mr Zimmer as a man who knows his field and, knows it well. The score to DKR is epic and, lends credence to the darkness of The Knight. If you ever feel like you want to "take on the world", sit at home in your favourite room, lights out, headphones on and...., revel in a sublime soundtrack and "Rise!!".

Hans Zimmer...what do you say about a man who really understands music, and it's importance to giving extra life to a movie? In his case....,supremo!! As with others who have reviewed this masterclass in original music scores for film, I'd like to add my voice in chorus of praise and applause and say that in Man Of Steel, Hans Zimmer will not disappoint. There are many pieces on this album that will move and inspire you (Flight is particularly inspiring). If you like good, solid music...you will find that Man Of Steel will have pride of place amongst the music you love and enjoy. You, in listening to it, may even believe you can fly!!

4.0 out of 5 stars May Not Be Everyone's Cup Of Tea, But Then Again, What Is?, 20 May 2014
This review is from: The Legend of Hercules [DVD] (DVD)
The critical mauling this film has received has been harsh and unfair, as it isn't as bad as it has been made out to be. True Renny Harlin (A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master, Die Hard 2, Cliffhanger, The Long Kiss Goodnight and Deep Blue Sea), has in the past put out work that, shall I say, stretch believability to it's extreme - The Long Kiss Goodnight being a perfect example, but in The Legend Of Hercules, though the film is a derivative combination of modern Sword and Sandal epics such as 300 and Immortals, it does have a heart, one being it's central love story. Yes, at times it does seem as if Renny wishes he was elsewhere, but if you are willing to take a step back and follow the path the story sets out, you'll find it reasonably entertaining. Kellan Lutz (minor player in the Twilight franchise) as the lead, does well in this. The effects could have been better, if the budget was equal to the likes of 300, Clash Of The Titans or Immortals, it wasn't so they worked with what they had. I have been careful in my review not to give anything away. Give it a go, it may well surprise you.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Into Darkness" With Relish!!, 30 July 2013
I would just like to say that J J Abrams reboot continues apace with a freshness and familiarity that brings original Trekkers and new fans alike together. Into Darkness is an excellent addition to the Trekkiverse. Quite possibly one of the best films of 2013.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Son Of Krypton Rises!!, 3 July 2013
This review is from: Man of Steel [DVD] (DVD)
I saw this on a visit to Reading at the Showcase cinema, in 3D. As with the Dark Knight reboot (Sir) Christopher Nolan has done a fine job in giving Kal El a much deserved, gritty beginning. I still like Superman Returns, but Man Of Steel shows it to be a limp, safe telling of the Superman legend - something most DC aficionados still rail against. Man Of Steel is told in a pared down less schmaltzy way, with a hard edge that is rather satisfying. The cast of actors seem to approach their roles with an understanding of the characters they play, and with an understanding of how the cinema audience view the legend. (I'm trying VERY hard not to include plot line spoilers!!). All I will say is, from start to finish Chris Nolan, once again delivers!! If you haven't seen it yet...why? I'm eagerly waiting for it's DVD release, so I can sit down, turn off the lights, and view Man Of Steel in home cinema surround sound!!

What remains to be said about MJ? Whatever your view (this coming from a die hard MJ fan), one thing CANNOT be denied!! He was AWESOME!! July 16th, 1988, Wembley Stadium, is the perfect example of what a performance should be. (Thanks to Amazon and the Royal Mail, for prompt delivery).

Wembley Stadium.
A man, on top of his game!!
Fan or no, you would be proud to own this!!
A man who, when he dances, incorporates the dance styles from Africa, Asia, the Native Americans, Tango, Salsa, Street/Urban (and other styles), and the greats (Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, James Brown, Jackie Wilson, and many others), a man who studied his craft.
Wherever you are Michael - thank you, for everything.
Get this, if only for the DVD of his Wembley performance. You won't get better!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderully Weird; Pointedly Telling, 24 Jun. 2012
This review is from: Iron Sky [DVD] (DVD)
I came across Star Wreck; In The Pirkinning (a wonderful mash-up of the Star Trek and Babylon 5 universes) by accident, and loved every second of it!!, so when I heard the the company that made that was in production with Iron Sky, I knew i had to see it!!
Iron Sky deals with isolationism in regards to how we view each other (USA), our wariness and tentative acceptance of technological advancement, race and the state of our political world, and how, according to the film, that most politicians are opportunists. On the subject of race, Iron Sky, touches on two sides of the same coin; 1) how some in the White Western world view people who aren't white and (by "whiting up" a black man) how the rest of the world is uncomfortable with the "Westernization" of the world (American cultural imperialism). The film also swipes ineffectual and inept politicians (the Sara Palin parody character a case in point), and also the grim visage of dictatorships the world over. Touchy issues these may be, but I feel that Iron Sky handles them well - because it knows fully well that by being utterly ridiculous and outlandish, the issues addressed will be softened.
All in all, Iron Sky's message is a simple one; it's who you are, not the colour of your skin, or where you're from, that really matters. And, if it takes an otherworldly invasion for us to believe it, we're in trouble!!
On a shoe string budget, Iron Sky has done what Independence Day spent millions addressing.
Iron Sky may not be to everyone's taste, but if you're not afraid to really look at yourself, watch Iron Sky - quite possibly one of the best films you'll get to see this year.

This is a brief review of a very good film. it's brief because I have one thing to say about it....the wordplay between Holmes and Moriarty is excellent!! And, to see how the one sizes up the other while talking...well what can I say? If you must see a film for 3mins of wary, barbed dialogue, see this!
