4.0 out of 5 stars Witchfinder meets Van Helsing, 2 Mar. 2008
This review is from: Twins Of Evil [1971] [DVD] (DVD)
Twins of Evil is the last and by far the best of the hammer Le-Fanu vampire trilogy the other two being Vampire Lovers and Lust for a Vampire. Twins of Evil ditches the male lesbian fantasy of the other two films and gives us a good old fashioned gothic horror with a twist. What I like about twins of evil (besides the very pretty twins) is Peter Cushings character. He is a witchfinder who just happens to have actually found someone evil in the evil Baron.Unlike Van Helsing he is not careful or considered he just rushes in to kill anyone he judges as evil.

The plot two pretty twins go to stay with their uncle(Cushing) who has a hobby which consists of dressing up and hunting down and burning evil doers (mostly young single women). He is however unable to act against the brash baron (damien thomas) because he has friend in high places. The Baron grows board with his debauched ways and decides to sacrifice himself to become a vampire. He then sets his sights on the beautiful twins one is eager one isnt which is which? Another fine mess for mr Cushing to sort out. The film is quite well done with some tense moments and an excellent atmosphere. Some good ideas to one I like is that you cant become a vampire unless you are evil if you are good and bitten by a vampire you just die mores the pity!

3.0 out of 5 stars Madhouse again Vincent imitating life?, 28 Feb. 2008
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I have already reviewed the magnificent theatre of blood so I just want to talk about madhouse. Madhouse is an odd thriller first of all there is nothing slightly supernatural about this film it is a thriller with horror actors about a horror actor.
Price is the horror actor Cushing is his co creator and writer. Price has a nervous breakdown after compelting his latest film as dr death and finding his beautiful young wife missing a head. When he recovers he has an opportunity to play Dr Death again when all of a sudden the killings start again is it Dr Death or is someone tring to drive Vincent nuts. Decent horror film with good performances from price and cushing

5.0 out of 5 stars Art imitating life?, 28 Feb. 2008
This review is from: Theatre Of Blood [DVD] (DVD)
Vincent Price Edward Kendall Sheridan Lionheart a shakesperian actor who seemingly commited suicide. This hillarious and quite gory horror is one of Price's greatest horror films he is perfectly suited in this role as a lot of people could argue that Price had many reasons to go around murdering critics. Vincent Price remains not only one of the greatest horror actors of all time but also an excellent actor just look at his performances in Laura and While the City Sleeps. Even in his horror roles his voice and his sense of timing are nothing other than fantastic.
The plot Price returns from the dead to murder the critcis who caused his demoise by infilicting terrible deaths on them based on shakesperian deaths. For example one gets drowned in wine one burnt alive and everyones favourite is when Robert Morley is choked eating a pie filled with his own poodles. Top stuff

5.0 out of 5 stars There is only one Tobe Hooper, 28 Feb. 2008
I am reviewing the 70s legendary "video nasty" not the remake as Amazon seem to have messed up the synopsis. I went to see this film about 7/8 years ago at the pictures. When it was re-released with all the other video nasties. This is definetly the best of all of those films it is just completly relntless although in my opinion not overly violent on the eye. The scariest part of this film is what you don't see and the tremendous sense of panic and peril in almost every scene. Even at the end you just know that something else could and probably will happen. In my snippet review I compared the film to se7en which I stick by just look at the interiors of the house.

The plot a group of teenagers pick up a hiker who proceeds to jokingly self harm and when he is chicked out of the van he marks it with his own blood. This marking attracts the attention of the service station that they stop at. This family station serve home made treats which several of the teenagers have a part in! Can the last remaining terrified teenager escape?

4.0 out of 5 stars Hammer still got the knack, 28 Feb. 2008
The 5th installment of Hammers Dracula films is excellent in my opinion. There was a review in a newsapaper stating that this was a recovery from the last film (risen from the grave). I think people said that because there was no one else besides Lee of any real substance. Ralph Bates fills that role excellently not as an adversary but as a catalyst in reviving Dracula with the help of Roy Kinnear and Peter Sallis as well as other dodgy blokes. The ending is a bit of a letdown as it isn't completly clear how Lee dies(which is why I can only give a 4)
The plot 3 dodgy repressed victorian dignitaries visit various brothels and like to think themselves adventurers in the darker part of human nature. On one of their quests they meet Ralph Bates who promises to get them higher than they have ever been. They must purchase some items of a dodgy salesman (roy kinnear). The items are a pendant, ring and a testube full of dried blood which all belong to a certain Count Dracula. When they are asked to drink the blood they all "bottle it" and poor Ralphie necks the lot and starts having some sort of satanic fit the gentlemen genorously put him out of his misery. However the count has been summonded and has revenge on his mind.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well made smalltown tv movie, 28 Feb. 2008
I thought this would just be a run of the mill tv mini series/movie. In a lot of ways it is most of the cast (except Tim Daly)are typical bit part players and the story is quite run of the mill. However the film is exceptionally well done the characters are believable and nothing is overstated you get an excellent understanding of small town american life.
The plot a strange man arrives, Andre Linoge he kills one woman without any motive and then freaks out several other people. The way he freaks people out is by revealing a guilty secret. He tells everyone that the town manager was sleeping with a prostitute while his mother was dying he reveals that one of the residents is a drug dealer etc he only manages to reveal a comaparitively innocent truth about the local constable (Tim Daly) that he cheated in an exam. Everyone else however is scared not only of his considerable power and knack for making people take their own lives but the chance that he will reveal something about them. This sets the scene for his demand "give me what I want and I will go away" his demand is pretty steep however he wants one of the children as his own. Thus begins the moral argument do they all die to protect one child or sacrifice one child to save them all. As stated before there is nothing spectacular about the story but it is very well performed and certainly doesn't feel like the full four hours.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Huns came out of the cave!, 24 Feb. 2008
This review is from: The 'Burbs [DVD] (1999) (DVD)
My sister and I are reviewing this film as it is definetley one of our favourites.First is that anyone I know who has seen this film cannot help quoting from it comments such as "this is walter" and "what is that Slavic?".

What makes this film remarkable is that Tom Hanks leads the film and it is just not a Tom Hanks film. There is no message of hope no triumph of decent Americans.on the contrary this is a film that celebrates fear of strangers/foreigners and extols the virtue of snooping. What I find slightly annoying is that Rick Duccomon (Art aka Tuna-Neck) has been in so little since (I think he was in the lamentable California Man and Gremlins 2 but that is it). This is a tragedy as Rick's performance is a revelation especially his ability to eat in every single scene.

It also has excellent support from the always interesting Feldman and the barking mad Dern. One review (halliwells)described the Burbs as the most unusual American major studio film of the 80s It is certainly one of them. Make sure you buy the dvd because it is on tv a lot but always annoyingly cut.

5.0 out of 5 stars Welcome to Fright Night for real, 24 Feb. 2008
This review is from: Fright Night [DVD] [1986] (DVD)
I love every bit of Fright Night. The music is truly awful 80s disco, the teenagers are very annoying and the central vampire is so over the top. The real highlight is Roddy Mcdowell as Peter Vincent (price and cushing perhaps) vampire killer or so his film fans think.
The story Charlie and Amy are about to have their first intimate encounter when Charlie is obsessed with what he sees out of the window(yeah right). Charlie is convinced his new suave neighbour is up to something especially when the pretty women who visit all seem to be found dead. Charlie starts to stalk his neighbour and calls on his friends to rally round they don't seem to believe him neither do the police. Despite the obvious facts he never leaves the house during the day at night lots of women have dissapered after seeing him and he has a cellar which contains a coffin that he sleeps in. No luck so his long suffering ex girlfriend hire Roddy to dissprove his theory. So the scene is set for a thrilling haunted house thriller. Which is accompanied by more dodgy music some spectacular gore and an exciting chase the hunter becoming the hunted over and over again.

4.0 out of 5 stars A hidden horror gem, 23 Feb. 2008
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
From Beyond is only available at the moment in America so you need a multi region dvd to play it. I first seen this film about 15 years ago on a three films for £2 rental and I loved it. It was made in the mid 80s which in my opinion the best cheap horrors were made. What I mean by cheap horror is excessive blood gore and violence with a token pretty girl. The greatest example of these films is Re-animator. This film is by the same director (yuzna) and has the same lead role the incomparable Jeffrey Combs.

From beyond is about a mad scientist who invents a sort of grand set of tuning forks that allow us to see all of the horrible creatures that suppossedly float around us. The problem is they can now see us. The scientist and his assistant (combs) are attacked by the creatures combs escapes but the scientist has his head bitten off. Combs is accused of the murder and is sectioned a radical young doctor decides that he is telling the truth and accompanies him back to the house were it all happened she is given a trusted body guard the legendary Ken Foree(Dawn of the Dead)who seems intent on spoofing Shaft. The problems start again straight away and we have another haunted house shocker on the cards. Not to give away the ending but it is fantastic no hope and no cure. Buy it if you love horror films.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovecraft Lives on, 23 Feb. 2008
Newsflash this film bears very little resemblance to the H.P Lovecraft short story. This does not mean that the film is no good. On the contrary this is one of my favourite horror films and the lead Jeffrey Combs is one of my favourite horror actors. Herbert West is a student who has developed a serum that can bring dead tissues to life. Abandoning any moral code West begins to test out his serum in America (in the intro we see him testing it in europe supposedly fingers crossed they will soon release a prequel). It has disastrous results notably with a roommate's cat. Soon West and his roommate who is initailly black mailed by West(he is sleeping with the deans attractive daughter) and then decides to willingly help him in his quest.

Quite a thin story but everything else fits in so well it is gory but understandably so (a lot of the action takes place in autopsy rooms and other areas with plenty of body parts that become extras in this marvelous horror
