1.0 out of 5 stars not for me, 13 Nov. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I have given up on this book, I did not finish the first story and will not attempt the second, or any by the same writer. At first I thought the idea was good but I cannot bear any of the protagonists; it seems rather contrived to bring in this particular team to find the child and the long description of their activities in Africa was totally unnecessary (padding?) . This is typical of a lot of books now, with long descriptions of gratuitous sex and violence; though this may appeal to some readers, it is not for me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good read, 13 Nov. 2015

Not to the standards of Marcia Willett or Rosamunde Pilcher but very enjoyable all the same. I am looking forward to the next book in the series, it is nice to read about ordinary people and ordinary lives, and also to avoid the steamy sex and gore that seem to have become necessary ingredients in any kind of story. I will definitely look out for more books by this writer.

3.0 out of 5 stars not great but..., 13 Nov. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Not a masterpiece by any means, but pleasant enough to read on the train or in the dentist's waiting room. It started off very nicely, though it appeared predictable from the very beginning, but came to en end rather quickly, as though the writer had reached the required number of words. Shame, really, as it could have been a nice little story. Let's hope the next installments avoid this pitfall and the story line becomes more plausible and the characters more fleshed out as a result.

very comfortable, the right size but... is not really waterproof. As soon as the dew gets into your shoes, your feet start getting damp. Not soaking wet, mind you, so they do help a bit.

2.0 out of 5 stars poor writing, 13 Nov. 2015

i have been struggling with this book for a while now and am only half way through; as it looks as though the murderer has been found out, I am (very mildly) curious to see what will happen in the second half. I have to confess I find the main protagonists extraordinarily annoying rather than fun or interesting but what annoys me most is the style: the writer seems to use the same words over and over again in the many (boring and often pointless) descriptions, it is, for example, not unusual to find a word such as "large" used in 3 or 4 consecutive sentences. It is, at the very best, careless. I will not read any more books by this author.

1.0 out of 5 stars The few characters has two-dimensional at best, even the dogs she constantly refers to, 3 Aug. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Very disappointing. There is very little about actually settling down in a foreign country, apart from a couple of (very boring) chapters that "describe" some local towns, it could be taking place anywhere. A couple of sweeping generalizations, of course, for example, about French men regularly relieving themselves in full view, followed by the advice you should not shake hands with a Frenchman as his hand could be covered in urine... It is more about congratulating themselves for being so strong, brave, resourceful, hard-working,self-reliant, etc and advice so the reader can become so.The few characters has two-dimensional at best, even the dogs she constantly refers to. The writer likes to drop French words in her sentences, probably aware we would otherwise forget where she lives for the reasons mentioned above; unfortunately, they are often misspelt (devi for devis) or misused (facture for guarantee), so the attempt to dazzle the reader with her linguistic prowess falls a bit flat and seems very contrived anyway.

The previous book is referred to so often that you end up wondering whether this new one is part of an advertising campaign for it. Very annoying.
I struggled to finish this book and will not pick up a book by the same author.

3.0 out of 5 stars not only because of the plot but also because most of the characters were nicely fleshed out, 16 July 2014
To start with, I was enjoying the book, not only because of the plot but also because most of the characters were nicely fleshed out; however, like most of the other readers who have posted a review, the more I read, the more errors I came across. Whoever edited the book relied heavily on a spellchecker and did not check meanings; as a result, idiotic mistakes such as "a sensitive sole" (must be very painful, do you end up lame?) or a confusion between emphasise and empathise, spoil the atmosphere entirely: you might find it amusing the first 2 or 3 times, then it becomes really annoying. Full stops are often placed in the middle of sentences and commas, though rarely used, are frequently in the wrong place; you then need to reread the sentence to make sense of it. This is a shame as the book itself, though no masterpiece, is ok.

Exactly what I wanted: very heavy non- slip rubber, driver's mat held in place so it does not move around. Fits perfectly on both sides.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Victor Meldrew without the star actor, 4 Feb. 2014

Quite amusing in places but becomes predictable and rather boring, quite disjointed too, not what I would call a diary.
