AA Road Map Normandy (AA Touring Map France 02) (AA Maps)
AA Road Map Normandy (AA Touring Map France 02) (AA Maps)

Edition: Map
Price: £5.49

3.0 out of 5 stars Incomplete, 1 May 2017

Excellent insofar as it goes but incomplete coverage. Section of Eure department to the SE of Gaillon including Giverny and Les Andelys missing from this map. So only part of Normandy.

No doubt some will find errors, omissions, etc but this is without doubt the most complete summary of the marque that I own and is a very handsome volume with excellent photographs. It is laid out model by model, which can be confusing at times because there is no sequential commentary. However, competing books such as those by Robson, Taylor and (particularly) Bennett can also be hard to follow at times with sometimes only vague differentiation of models, unassisted by relevant photos. Admittedly model changes were often subtle but it does help when they are treated individually as is the case in this book. All these books suffer from factual variations, notably with specs, but this is no better nor worse than the others in this regard. It remains my "go to" source and it is a shame it is no longer in print.

1.0 out of 5 stars Best part is the front cover, 2 Mar. 2017

Don't bother with this. I am very surprised it has been published. Absolutely minimal text apart from chassis and engine numbers and bare specs. Otherwise just lots and lots of very poor quality small scale monochrome photos. If I could give this a zero rating I would. Thank goodness for Amazon's very fair return policy, which I have only had to use three times in the last 20 years, one of which was for a defective item.

4.0 out of 5 stars Attractive book but too many factual inaccuracies, 25 Dec. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a handsome book and the photographs are splendid. The original edition is, unfortunately, riddled with factual inaccuracies, mainly with regard to technical specs. Additionally, the writing is quirky or stilted by turn suggesting a patchwork approach with some paragraphs lifted straight from official material. The three language approach is cumbersome too, as is the interleaving of road and race material. Nonetheless an attractive volume but, unless inaccuracies have been corrected in the second edition, the reader looking for reliability should look elsewhere, the best all round sources being "Power, Beauty and Soul" by David Dowsey or, for the DB7, Andrew Noakes' excellent single model study.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unforgettable, 25 Sept. 2016

A lucid history of a ghastly period. Well written, gripping and, at times, absolutely nauseating. A morality tale about the sub-humanity of the masses and the wickedness of their leaders.

4.0 out of 5 stars Poor edition for such fabulous books, 25 Sept. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review covers all three volumes. The writing is, of course, sublime and much wittier and scurrilous than the obvious comparison, Anthony Powell's Dance. It would easily merit five stars were it not for the rather poor quality of this print edition (and expensive for what it is too). But this is a small gripe for the pleasure of seeing these books back in print. How one would welcome an imprint commensurate with the quality of the writing.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best book on the R129 that I have read, 25 Sept. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is excellent. It covers the history well and includes a very useful section on issues to look out for with the various models as well as information on the special editions which I have not been able to find elsewhere. As such it is both more useful and more digestible than Brian Long's book, which is more of an uncritical history. The use of English is a bit Germanic but this is a minor detail. Highly recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK but rather uninspiring, 16 May 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is, as you might expect, a largely accomplished performance. Seeing as EC is dressed in blue denim throughout I suspect it was all taken from one performance too. It's OK but no more than that. We've seen and heard most of it before. To be fair at their (and my) age one shouldn't expect any gut wrenching rock so I won't criticise the lack of it except to say it's all a bit too laid back for my taste. Not perfect - the maestro makes more than the odd mistake but disguises the errors with such aplomb that their only real impact is to add a bit of interest. Clapton may not be the greatest technician but he is certainly one of the most musical in his approach and listening or watching leaves a nice warm glow without feeling one has been challenged. And herein lies the problem. Yes, some of these standards have new intros but thereafter they revert to form with the main difference being that solos which might once have come from Eric, as in Nobody Loves You, now are done elsewhere, in this instance by Chris Stainton. Sound quality is fine except in Queen of Spades (which is almost identical to 5 Long Years), which is execrable, the cymbal hits gelling into one acoustic mess and destroying the whole mix. Not sure whether that's the fault of Steve Gadd or the mix engineer but the end result is atrocious. Overall, not one of his best, but then those were done many years ago
