5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant if somewhat surprising solo effort from Godsmack frontman, 10 Jun. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Avalon (Audio CD)
Recorded over a seven-year span, Godsmack frontman Sully Erna's solo debut may come as a surprise to fans expecting another chiseled collection of angst-fueled midtempo slabs of alternative metal. Erna’s still filled with angst, but musically he’s branched out, choosing the tribal, Far East motifs that have begun popping up on Godsmack's most recent albums over the bleak post-grunge approach that has earned them multiple Grammy nominations.

This change is most evident on Avalon's opulent title cut, a sweeping, cinematic acoustic gem that sounds like a cross between Led Zeppelin's “Battle of Evermore” and Evanescence's “My Immortal.” That sound expands to an even greater extent on the single “Sinner’s Prayer,” bolstered by guest vocalist Lisa Guyer, Bulgarian cellist Irina Chirkova, and Dead Can Dance percussionist Niall Gregory. As with all of Erna’s work, the subject matter is intensely personal yet simply rendered, and the overall effect can be both majestic and sullen.

The weight of the world does indeed grow heavier (for the listener) as the album progresses, but there’s a lot to be said for managing to crank out such a powerful product with all of the amps turned off. (All music)

5.0 out of 5 stars Laidback, stoner rock, excellently executed, 10 Jun. 2014

This review is from: Gods & Goddesses (Audio CD)
Brant Bjork has developed his own signature style with his instant recognizable voice and always putting groove in front of his stoner rock type music. This is a very immediate album offering a really warm, 70's style with more modern touches.

There are lots of influences on show here: Black Sabbath, early ZZ Top, Hendrix and more obviously Kyuss.

Whilst this is no prog album, the songs all take on a feel good, laid back and easy flowing structure that puts a smile on my face. The playing and production are however excellent making it all sound so easy to execute.

t sounds so comfortable and laidback and seems to just have fun, never taking himself too seriously which adds a lot to the final result. Also, his rather powerful voice and typical Southern accent is crucial to adding that desert rock atmosphere to 'Gods & Goddesses'.

"Radio Mecca" has a great bass line and great guitar licks, creating a relaxed atmosphere. "The Future Punk (We Got It)" is another definite high point. "Somewhere, Some Woman" ends the album with a harder edge, but retains the feel good factor.

This is a great CD

4.0 out of 5 stars The last of the great Anvil releases, 10 Jun. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Forged In Fire (Audio CD)
Forged in fire was the third release from Anvil and should of taken them to the next level. Unfortunately it didn't.

There are some great songs on this album: Forged In Fire, Winged Assassins & Free As The Wind are my personal faves as they a slight maturity over the double entendre laden Motormount and Butterbust jerky.

The production is solid, the drumming and speed on some of the songs show a definite pre-cursor to the heavier, faster bands that followed.

Robb Reiner delivers a jaw-dropping performance, pulling out his genre-changing double-bass-drum technique on nearly every song and never letting the momentum drop.

A very solid album that deserves recognition.

4.0 out of 5 stars Classic metal in a Priest style, 10 Jun. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The second release by US metallers Malice is a fairly decent follow up to their classic debut.

The songwriting highs aren't quite as solid as the debut album, but there is Licence to Kill, Chain Gang Woman & Against the Empire.

The production is solid and the riffs are great and offers a good combination of speed and melody.

If you like Judas priest style metal then this is great addition to your collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply awesome, 9 Jun. 2014

The first to ZZ Top albums as god intended. Gone are the horrible remastered versions and replaced with the warmer originals. No write up in necessary as these are all stone wall classics.

Great value and sounding awesome

A great way to pick up latter day Rush at a great price. Featuring the remastered Vapour Trails this is easily one of the best purchases i have made in recent times.

1.0 out of 5 stars This is awful, 9 Jun. 2014

I bought this on a whim and quite frankly I find nothing on this CD to write home about. Amateurish and without a sense of humour I don't know who this would appeal to.

Sorry!

5.0 out of 5 stars The bands Best, never beaten, 9 Jun. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Metal on Metal (Audio CD)
A brilliant follow up to the debut, this is the bands best release and never bettered in terms of songs, production, riffs and playing.

This is "classic" metal in it's truest sense, nothing more, nothing less.

The years have treated this album well and the songs still hold up very well.

If you love traditional, classic metal played with passion, then this is a stone cold must have.

Best songs are: Metal On Metal, Mothra, Stop Me, March of the Crabs & Tease Me, Please Me. In all honesty its all great though

Anvil could of and arguably should of been huge. Ahead of their time in terms of speed coupled with hooks and the sizable riffs, they had it all-for a while!

Nowadays the song titles tell it all and and with the lyrics are a little cheesy, however the playing and the songs still stand up and are well worth a listen to understand how bands like Anvil laid the path to speed metal and beyond.

Stand out tracks for me are: School Love, Paint It, Black and Oh Jane
