4.0 out of 5 stars Flawed masterpiece, 8 Mar. 2007
I remember hearing about The Rutles from a friend (a disgrunted Beatles fan). So obviously I had to see it! I can see why this upset a few of the Fab Four's fans, but maybe they missed the point - this is an extremely affectionate parody of the world's greatest band, set to a perfect pastiche score by Neil Innes. It's not without problems - stretching the joke to cover the entire Rutles career makes it a tad too long and contrived, and there's a couple of forgettable scenes with Saturday Night Live alumni along for the ride who add nothing - but this is still comic genius and very funny. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Unmissable lunacy, 25 Jan. 2007
The box set contains the four Python movies and a bunch of bonus disks

- And Now For Something Completely different is a terrifically funny collage of material taken from the first three seasons of the TV show. Made for American TV, this took most of the famous skits (notable exceptions being the Spanish Inquisition and the Ministry of Silly walks) and animations, and turned them into a wonderful stream-of-consciousness movie which is very reminiscent of the original TV show.

- Monthy Python and the Holy Grail is THE legendary movie! A beautiful pastiche of all the Arthurian legends with twists that only the Pythons could conceive (limbless loony knights, a witch hunt involving ducks, Knights who say meaningless yet terrifying word, and a killer rabbit, for starters) this has aged amazingly well, and still has teeth as sharp as the rabbit.

- Monty Python's Life of Brian documents the rise and fall of a man mistaken for a messiah (but I didn't need to tell you that, did I?). It declares all out war on religion, committees, and the gullibility of the needy masses. And, or course, Roman grammar. Recently voted the funniest film of all time for the umpteenth time, especially by cheesemakers, this one really delivers the laughs for those who like their comedy as irreverent as it is lunatic.

- Monty Python's Meaning of Life is an odd duck - part comedy, part musical, part pirate tale and part liver transplant documentary! A loose association of skits (many of which are absolute gold - a wafer-thin mint, anyone?) it is let down by a poor ending and a general lack of substance. The only one of the bunch that's less than excellent, this is a downbeat end to an amazing creative output for the world's funniest comedy team.

- The Personal Best is a taster for the six-disc set of "Personal Best" material from the TV show, and isn't much to write home about.

- The bonus disks are good, but most will buy the set for the superlative movies!

If you don't have this, ignore the silly price tag (a virtually identical set was half the price last year) and BUY this. You need it! You want it!

Just mind out for the rabbit.

5.0 out of 5 stars Move over Romero, THIS is the stuff!, 6 Nov. 2006
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I watched SHAUN OF THE DEAD again last night, and as ever I was amazed just how good a movie it is. Most horror flicks are a simple idea that warrants 15 minutes of screen time, padded out with special effects where its characterisation should be. SHAUN is the opposite - 99 minutes chock full of well-drawn characters, great performances, terrific humour, moaning fresh-eating undead and buckets of human entrails! This and the recent remake of DAWN OF THE DEAD are the standards by which zombie flicks should be judged. Forget Romero's hugely disappointing and sympathetic LAND OF THE DEAD - SHAUN ROCKS!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid and sad, a very impressive album that has not aged, 3 May 2006
This review is from: Clutching At Straws (Audio CD)
I've recently rediscovered this album, after buying it as a teenager. I loved it musically back then, but much of the material, which is downbeat, dark and cynical, makes far more sense to me as a thirty-something!

To be honest, I was surprised by how GOOD it still sounded, something which the band's first three outings (FUGAZI especially) cannot claim. Musically strong, lyrically dark and twisted, but like any great album it is far greater than the sum of its parts.

The band went on to produce better material than anything they did during the Fish era - the magnificent BRAVE, AFRAID OF SUNLIGHT and MARBLES especially, all of which are as dark, though less bitte - but CLUTCHING AT STRAWS is a fine album that has stood the test of time.

It deserves applause, and your ear-time!

4.0 out of 5 stars Bizarre, interesting, and disturbing, 7 April 2006
This film is a curious but very compelling tale. You would be forgiven for watching it for an hour and wondering where it was going, and wondering why such a quirky little story had gathered such rave reviews over the years. The concept is simple - a lonely widower finally resolves to remarry, and seeks out a partner by unorthodox (but understandable) means. But what happens to his world and his sanity after he chooses his bride-to-be is another matter entirely. Beautifully shot and carefully told (and most definitely not for the squeamish) AUDITION is a terrific movie that is destined for classic status.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great pedigree, but that's about all, 7 April 2006
I approached this mini-series with high hopes, but was sorely disappointed. The cast list is impressive, the concept is good, the production pedigree solid. But this is a slow, untidy story that promises much and doesn't deliver. It constantly seems on the verge of getting somewhere, and this kept me watching four four long hours. But when the final credits rolled all I could say was that this was an opportunity missed.

4.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful mix of CGI and traditional animation, 6 Jan. 2006
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
SKY BLUE is the first UMD movie I've bought, and I have to say I really enjoyed it. It's a Korean movie, a beautiful (if initially peculiar) mixture of futuristic CGI imagery and traditional animation.
The story focuses on social imbalance, with the safe and idyllic lifestyle of the HAVES being facilitated by the hazardous work of the HAVE NOTS. Into this mix throw a heroic revolutionary figure trying to level the playing field, his beautiful lost love, her ambiguous boyfriend, and an evil grafter trying to maintain the status quo, and you've got a good tale for the telling. The pace is fast, the characters well formed, and it's gorgeous to look at. I'd heartily recommend it!
From a technical point of view, the movie looks terrific on the PDP screen, it's a vibrant and crystal clear transfer to UMD. Special features are lacking, but as a newcomber to UMD movies I'm not sure if they're typical in most offerings so I've not let that affect my rating.
FOUR STARS!

3.0 out of 5 stars Groundbreaking, but curiously unsatisfying, 6 Jan. 2006
This review is from: Battle Royale [DVD] [2001] (DVD)
I'm relatively new to Asian cinema, and this film came highly recommended. Having watched it, I have fairly mixed feeling about it. As a social commentary I think the film works quite well - what are the ultimate solutions for problems with an unruly youth and social disorder? In the age of reality TV, this doesn't feel too far fetched. As a fan of western movies, the violence didn't shock me, tho clearly it's strong, particularly as it involves children. But I feel the film's main problem is its large cast, which meant that very little time is spent developing any characters to the point where I cared about their fate. I liked the film, but I didn't get involved enough to regard it as a classic.

4.0 out of 5 stars A lovely little platform game!, 31 Dec. 2005
This review is from: Kao Challengers (PSP) (Video Game)
This was a real surprise amongst the early PSP releases - a virtually unpublicised platform game! And it's a goodie. You control an eager young Kangaroo called Kao (pronounced "cow") on his quest to save the animals of the world from kidnap by an evil hunter. To do this, he has to collect coins and gems and conquer the traps and puzzles that lay between him and the trapped animals. Nothing remarkable there, you might say, but the execution of the game is beautiful - lush, vibrant environments and detailed animations that really show off what the PSP can do. The levels are well designed, with just the right balance of exploration, puzzle solving, shooting and frustration. One more try to crack that tricky sequence? I kept going back! There's very few platformers around for PSP right now, but even with such little choice I can highly recommend this game - it's definitely worth parting with your hard earned (or saved) pennies for!

3.0 out of 5 stars This is THE WARRIOR WITHIN for PSP, 16 Dec. 2005
Hi there, I'm not too far into the game, but I have seen enough to point out to folks that this is a conversion of PRINCE OF PERSIA - THE WARRIOR WITHIN for the PSP. It's very nicely done, but if you've played the game before (as I had) it's not going to offer you much.
I've given this three stars - if you've not played the original, it's worth four, if you have, probably one or two!
