5.0 out of 5 stars His paintings are wrought of love for humanity through every brush-stroke, 16 Sept. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book is a rich and completely absorbing treasure trove of history, anecdote and the wonders of Renoir's painted world. Taking us from the mid-19th century to the first part of the 20th century, it charts the struggles the painter overcame to understand, reach the very essence of the natural world and its people. His paintings are wrought of love for humanity through every brush-stroke. So fascinating and completely recommended. Meanwhile, the author, Jean Renoir, defers to his father, leaving one wishing to turn both back to Renoir's paintings and Jean's films. It's also a hymn to the artisan in the painter, to things being made by hand, having been seen, observed or remembered - about the loss of these skills and qualities, ways of living in the face of ever more mechanisation.

A Short Walk in the Hindu Kush
by Eric Newby
Edition: Paperback
Price: £9.98

5.0 out of 5 stars This is an excellent book, written with utter self-deprecation, 16 Sept. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is an excellent book, written with utter self-deprecation, great good humour and honesty, yet telling the story of great achievement. It is engaging and a thoroughly good read, especially in a world which is getting ever smaller in terms of unknown places to be discovered. It is also highly relevant now, given the focus of attention in that war-torn corner.

3.0 out of 5 stars Difficult to work with., 24 Oct. 2014
This book is doubtless very good, though I'm not sure I've really grasped it yet as in practice I'm finding it opaque and difficult to comprehend. I so long to get stuck in to doing all the exercises but find I simply don't understand the methodology. Shall keep at it, it's clearly very carefully considered and based on practical teaching.

5.0 out of 5 stars Irreplaceable gem, 24 Oct. 2014
I still have my copy of this book from childhood, so bought it this time for a family member who missed her own copy. It is a treasure trove of activities. I use it as a teaching resource book or simply to enjoy reading. Irreplaceable gem, amazed it's not been reprinted.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very much recommended., 24 Oct. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Interaction of Color (Paperback)
I'm just getting stuck in to reading this book and hope to carry out the exercises, though already know that it is a complete gem. I recently bought another colour workshop book, which daunts me as it seems to render the subject opaque. This book however is poetic in approach and makes sense in terms of understanding colour as being essentially relative.

The Age of Doubt (Inspector Montalbano Mysteries)
The Age of Doubt (Inspector Montalbano Mysteries)
by Andrea Camilleri
Edition: Paperback

3.0 out of 5 stars The TV dramatisations may be better, 4 Oct. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I loved the TV adaptations of the Montalbano stories, as did my parents, so thought they'd enjoy the books. They weren't so gripped, so maybe something gets lost in translation. Shall read it myself to find out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant drama, great acting, 4 Oct. 2013

This review is from: Coriolanus [DVD] [2011] (DVD)
I studies Coriolanus at school for 'A' levels and didn't get on with it. This excellent dramatization by Ralph Fiennes brings the play to life in gripping fashion, set in a way that relates to our current times. Great casting and acting too.
